COUNTY TOURNAMENT: Vinemont advances to semifinals with 62-32 win over Hanceville

HANCEVILLE, Ala. – In our first varsity girls’ matchup of this year’s County Tournament, (2) Vinemont squared off against (7) Hanceville Monday afternoon and the Lady Eagles were in control of this one from start to finish. Vinemont went into the locker room leading 38-19 at halftime and maintained a 20-point advantage throughout most of the second half on its way to a 62-32 win and a spot in the semifinals.

Vinemont got off to a quick start to the game. Vayda Yarbrough knocked down a three, then Reagan Robinson drained a short jumper and collected a steal and a layup to give the Lady Eagles a quick 7-0 lead less than a minute into the game. Robinson laid it in, then Vayda Yarbrough scored down low to make it 11-0. Alex Twitty split her free throws to put Hanceville on the scoreboard and later put in a pair of baskets to trim it to eight at 13-5. Vayda Yarbrough knocked down a three, and Stephens scored down low to give Vinemont an 18-5 lead. Vayda Yarbrough’s third three of the first quarter made it 21-5, then Addison Holcomb scored the final five points of the quarter to give the Lady Eagles a commanding 26-5 lead going into the second.

Arleigh Thomason buried a three to make it 29-5 early in the second quarter. McKenzie Aaron knocked down a short jumper, then Piper Butts knocked down a three to cut it to 29-10. Kerrigon Moore scored down low to make it a 32-12 game, then five straight points by Twitty cut it to 36-17. Vayda Yarbrough scored off a Lady Bulldog turnover to give Vinemont a 38-17 lead, and the Lady Eagles would take a 38-19 lead into the locker room.

Moore’s basket in the paint cut it to 38-21 early in the third. Caroline Miller drained a three from the right wing, then Robinson scored down low to give Vinemont a 45-21 lead. Robinson banked in a floater, and Stephens put in a basket in the paint to extend the Lady Eagle lead to 49-24. Baskets by Moore and Twitty made it a 49-29 game. Brooklyn Yarbrough knocked down a short jumper to give the Lady Eagles a 51-29 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Holcomb scored on a pair of baskets in the paint, then Robinson scored through a foul and ended up hitting the free throw to make it 58-29. Miller and Thomason each added a basket down low to put the finishing touches on a 62-32 win for Vinemont.

Robinson led Vinemont with 17 points in the win, followed by Yarbrough with 15. Twitty finished with 13 points in the loss.

The Lady Eagles will face either (3) West Point or (6) Cold Springs in the varsity girls’ semifinals Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
