CULLMAN, Ala. – Military veterans and beginning farmers interested in small fruit production are invited to attend the upcoming Military Veteran & Beginning Farmer: Small Fruit for Small Farms workshop. The event, co-hosted by Alabama Extension-Cullman County and the North Alabama Agriplex, will take place on Thursday, Jan. 16, from 6-8 p.m. at the North Alabama Agriplex. Attendees will also be provided a light supper during the session.

This free workshop provides an in-depth exploration of small fruit farming, focusing on key topics such as selecting ideal varieties for north Alabama, crop establishment and pest management for blueberries, blackberries, strawberries and muscadine grapes. It aims to deliver practical advice and foundational knowledge for both newcomers and experienced growers.

The workshop will be led by Dr. Kira Sims, county coordinator for the Cullman County Extension Office, who holds a PhD in Horticulture, and Arnold Caylor, retired Experiment Station manager, who has conducted extensive research on fruit trees.

“The goal of this workshop is to provide participants with foundational knowledge and practical skills in small fruit production,” said Sims. “Whether you’re a military veteran transitioning into farming or a beginner farmer, this is a valuable opportunity to gain insights from experienced professionals.”
