CULLMAN, Ala. – The next chapter in Cullman City Schools is officially underway. On Thursday, Jan. 9, 2025, officials with Cullman City Schools, the City of Cullman and more broke ground on construction for the system’s new Cullman Intermediate School, which will eventually combine grades 3-5 that are currently divided across East and West Elementary Schools.

“This moment is 20 years in the making,” Superintendent Kyle Kallhoff said. “There are so many people to thank, including the school board, mayor and city council, and all the parties involved in getting this project off the ground. I also want to thank West Elementary and Principal Jay Page in advance for their patience and flexibility to come over the next two years.”

The new Cullman Intermediate School will be built at the current West Elementary School location, eventually serving all Cullman students grades 3-5. The intermediate school will feature a new two-story wing that will face U.S. Highway 278, which will add approximately 18 new classrooms plus administrative space.

A new multipurpose building facing U.S. Highway 278 is also planned, which will feature bleachers on one side, a full basketball court, coaches office space, storage and a stage. The facility will also be able to double as a storm shelter.

As part of the project, the existing classrooms at West Elementary will be upgraded, along with the restrooms and overall infrastructure. The existing gym will be converted into a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) lab for students to have space for robotics, maker space, 3D printing, drones and collaboration. The library and current cafeteria will also be expanded, with the stage in the cafeteria removed to expand dining space. The Smith Center (the old library) will be converted into additional classroom space.

Along the way, the campus footprint will be altered to enclose the concourse from the front to the back of the campus to increase security, along with parking to accommodate at least 100 employees and additional spaces for visitors and ADA requirements.

Once complete, the expanded intermediate campus will feature up to 14 classrooms per grade level, self-contained special education classrooms, resource special education classrooms, an English language learners and speech room, a music room, art room, gifted room and lab space.

The intermediate school campus is tentatively slated to open in the 2027-2028 school year.

“I’m thankful for the work the city council has done in recent years to grow the economy and make a project like this more viable,” Cullman Mayor Woody Jacobs added. “We are very excited.”
