CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman Police Department started hosting Coffee with a Cop events over a decade ago — a way to bridge the gap between law enforcement officers and residents with conversation and community.

The department will host its next event on Wednesday, Jan.  29, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at Cornerstone Church of the Nazarene.

CPD Community Relations Officer Adam Clark said Coffee with a Cop is a community-building initiative aimed at fostering positive interactions between law enforcement officers and the people they serve.

“It was originally launched in Hawthorne, California, in 2011, and has since expanded nationwide across all 50 states and internationally,” Clark said. “The program’s goal is to create an opportunity for informal, open conversations. It helps to build relationships that may not occur during routine policing, especially in crisis situations. The concept is simple: there’s no agenda — just coffee and conversation.”

Clark said this allows officers and residents to connect in a relaxed environment where they can discuss local issues, share concerns and get to know one another on a personal level.

“The absence of formal topics encourages an open and welcoming atmosphere,” he said. “Our first Coffee with a Cop was approximately 11 years ago at the Main Avenue Jack’s location.  Since then, we have had them at several restaurants and coffee shops, but our most successful one was at Cullman Cosmetic and Family Dentistry.  It seemed as if the whole neighborhood attended.”

Pastor Joe McNulty from Cornerstone Church of the Nazarene invited Clark and Police Chief Joey Duncan to speak at the event.

“While the official start time for Coffee with a Cop is at 4:30 p.m., we will have the opportunity to address the congregation about upcoming events and the future of the Cullman Police Department,” Clark said. “This is a great opportunity to engage with community members, answer questions and highlight the department’s vision for the future, all while enjoying a casual cup of coffee together.”

Cornerstone Church of the Nazarene is located at 321 Third St. SE in Cullman.  For more information about the event, contact the Cullman Police Department.
