BAILEYTON, Ala. – Mayor Windell Calloway on Monday, Jan. 6, called this year’s first monthly meeting of the Baileyton Town Council to order, with Councilman Greg Griffin opening with an invocation. The night’s business saw the council name the new town clerk, and discuss community improvements.
The council first discussed old business, including the special-called meeting held Dec. 9, 2024, in which it interviewed candidates for the position of town clerk. At the conclusion of the interviews, Councilman Benny Guthrie made a motion to move into an executive session. During this session, the council voted on the top three candidates. Summer Bixler accepted the position at a rate of $18 per hour. The council voted unanimously to approve Bixler for the position at its Jan. 6 meeting.
Next up, the council reflected on the annual Christmas event hosted by the Town of Baileyton and the Baileyton Volunteer Fire Department. At this event, over 500 hotdogs and hamburgers were served, a trailer full of toys was given to children and visitors reported staying for over an hour and a half to participate in the experience. Said Mayor Calloway said, “I really want to thank the fire department, the people really liked it…It was a really big success that has grown every year.”
In new business, the council discussed community improvements. Calloway shared that new signs have been posted for various roads throughout the town. The council asked for the community’s help in identifying street lights in need of service. Report street lights that are in need of service by calling town hall at 256-796-6447 with the address of the area in need.
The council also set its monthly meeting dates for the 2025 calendar year as the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. The next town council meeting will be Monday, Feb. 3, at 7 p.m. at Baileyton Town Hall, located at 95 Fire Station Road.
