CULLMAN, Ala. – As winter weather approaches and storms are rolling in, Cullman Electric Cooperative is offering valuable tips for residents to stay safe and comfortable, particularly during power outages caused by severe weather like snow and ice.
Vice President of Member Engagement & Communications Brian Lacy provided practical advice for those who rely on electric heat and other power-dependent devices, ensuring they are prepared in case of extended outages.
For those who rely on electric heat, Lacy suggested several cost-effective strategies to stay warm during a power outage.
“National energy experts recommend setting your thermostat to 68 degrees or lower when you’re home,” he said.
Lowering the temperature when you’re sleeping or away can also help conserve energy. Sealing air leaks around windows and doors is another simple yet effective way to increase home comfort.
“Caulking and weather stripping around windows and doors can save energy and keep your home warmer,” Lacy explained. “A quick fix for leaky doors is to place a towel at the bottom to block cold air.”
In addition to adjusting the thermostat and sealing leaks, Lacy recommended bundling up in warm clothes and using blankets to stay comfortable.
“Wearing wool socks or slippers can help regulate body temperature and keep you warm,” he noted. “The strategic use of window coverings can also make a difference. Open blinds during the day to let sunlight warm your home, and close them at night to keep cold air out,” he said.
For residents who depend on medical equipment that requires power, Lacy stressed the importance of having a backup plan.
“Anyone who has medical equipment that requires power needs to have a backup generator or a safe place to go during an extended power outage,” he advised.
While Cullman Electric Cooperative strives to maintain service 24/7, outages can still occur, and it’s essential to be prepared for such situations. Lacy urged residents to report any outages immediately through the cooperative’s 24-hour phone system, text message or online.
“The faster we can establish the details, the faster our crews can begin restoring power,” he said.
Space heaters can provide warmth in specific rooms, but Lacy offered safety tips to prevent accidents.
“Make sure to plug your space heater directly into a wall outlet—never use extension cords or power strips,” he said.
It’s also crucial to check the condition of the heater’s cord and plug while keeping children away.
“Keep your space heater at least three feet away from children, pets, and flammable items,” Lacy warned. “When purchasing a space heater, consider one with an automatic shutoff feature for added safety.”
When snow, ice or storms cause significant power outages, Cullman Electric Cooperative is committed to restoring service as quickly and safely as possible, he said.
“Every storm and every power outage are unique, and while we can’t guarantee power, we work hard to respond as quickly as possible,” Lacy said. “The cooperative stays prepared for any severe weather, and quick response depends on accurate information. Residents are encouraged to report outages, which helps the team assess the situation and prioritize restoration efforts.”
