George Walter Nation Dodd was born in Gardendale, Alabama to Walter Averigo Dodd and Jeffie Mae Nation Dodd on September 8, 1946. He lived a full and varied life, living all over the United States and following a multitude of careers. From a Michigan builder to a California farrier, he enjoyed life to its fullest, pursuing interests like music, golf, collectibles and Harley Davidsons. George returned to Alabama in 1998 where he met the love of his life, Faith Hammock, and instantly became a part of the family.
The next 26 years were filled with making happy memories as PaPaw, leading his grandchildren in adventures in soakies, getting ‘gas-a-fuel’ and riding along in dump trucks and heavy equipment. When he wasn’t playing with his grandchildren, George was likely to be found in the swing enjoying the afternoon with Pug or off on a cruise where he spent many hours eating ice cream.
George will be remembered as a kind and patient man who always helped anyone in need and touched many lives with his generosity.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Averigo Dodd and Jeffie Mae Nation Dodd, a brother-in-law, Odie Heorle and the love of his life, Faith ‘Pug’ Hammock. He is survived by his sister, Angie Heorle, children Jamey (Jenny) Hammock, Nancy (Jason) Keith and Jeff (Vicki) Hammock, grandchildren Mallory (Clay) Rollo, Morgan Hammock, Joseph Keith, Jacob Keith, Mattie Claire Keith, Justin (Erin) Hammock and Jamey (Jessica) Hammock, and 7 great-grandchildren including his shining star, Cleo Josiah Rollo.
Pallbearers are Jason Keith, Joseph Keith, Jacob Keith, Izayah Glenon, Clay Rollo, Drake Bentley and Chris Calvert, and honorary pallbearer, Ronnie Watts.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to Aveanna Hospice, Hanceville Nursing and Rehab and Pop’s Cafe in Hanceville for their loving support, care and friendship.
