CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman Kayak Anglers (CKA) is set to host its seventh annual New Year’s Day Throwdown on Wednesday, Jan. 1, at Duck River Reservoir. This informal, friendly competition invites seasoned anglers and newcomers alike to enjoy a day of kayak fishing. Launch begins at 6:30 a.m., with fishing lines hitting the water at 7. Participants will wrap up at 1:30 p.m., with a post-tournament meetup and results announced at Los Cabos Mexican Restaurant at 2.
Registration is $30 and will be handled at the ramp on the morning of the event, with participants able to launch from both the east and west ramps on Duck River. The registration fee includes $25 for the pot, $3 for the biggest fish and $2 to support the CKA’s 2025 season. This year’s event is geared toward anglers of all experience levels.
“This tournament is a great opportunity to ‘dip your toe’ into competitive kayak fishing,” said Luke Turner, event organizer. “Even if you don’t enjoy the competitive side, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.”
Participants are required to follow specific guidelines, including mandatory PFD use at all times, use of Ketch measuring boards and ensuring fish photos meet criteria such as the fish’s mouth being closed, facing left and dorsal fin up, with no restraining devices allowed in the picture. The tournament operates on a four-fish limit, and late submissions after 2:30 p.m. will result in a penalty of 1 inch per minute.
CKA hosts this event provide a fun and approachable entry point into the world of competitive kayak fishing, while also fostering a sense of community among local anglers.
“This is a very relaxed event aimed at getting guys and gals both new and veterans familiar with tournament kayak fishing,” Turner stated. “Don’t be scared to ask questions or for advice.”
Founded in 2017, CKA is part of a statewide network of kayak fishing groups that host a championship at the end of each season. Cullman’s abundant midsize lakes and reservoirs make it a prime location for the sport. Each year, CKA also hosts a “super-regional” tournament on Smith Lake, drawing clubs from across Alabama for fishing and camping at Smith Lake Park.
