CULLMAN, Ala. – The holidays are a popular time to add a new fur baby to the family. New pets always make children’s eyes light up. Add a Christmas hat or sweater and it’s that much cuter. The cuddles and cuteness are hard to resist, but it’s important to consider the responsibility that comes with a new pet.
Cullman County Animal Shelter Manager Andrea Hudson advised, “Make sure you understand that it is a lifetime commitment. These are living and breathing animals that have feelings. Make sure that you are for the commitment after the holidays. Before you get an animal make sure that you have the means to provide for that animal. It is not something that you can return. It is a commitment.”
The Christmas season also means colder weather. It’s important to keep pets inside or in a comfortable environment when temperatures begin to drop. Although some animals may have a warm coat, if it’s too cold for you, then it’s most likely too cold for your pet.
And during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, make sure you make time for your new pet’s needs, such as potty training consistency, feeding and attention.
Hudson encouraged those in the community who are considering a new pet to visit the animal shelter.
“We are open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. We always encourage visitors. We love for people to make sure it is a perfect fit. We have areas where people can meet and try different animals to make sure they’re a good fit,” she said. “We do count on our community to come out and adopt.”
