CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman Christkindlmarkt has doubled in size since last year. For the first time, and it is now open daily through Dec. 23, from 11 a.m.-9 p.m.
“Christkindlmarkt last year versus this year has more than doubled in size. We were able to get a grant and it helped us to frame some of the cost. We have been able to add a lot more booths and a lot more space because it was crowded last year. We just didn’t realize that many more people were going to come,” said Cullman Mayor Woody Jacobs. “It is crowded again this year. We were able to get the Ferris wheel this year, and that was a good addition. The way we worked that out is that it didn’t really cost us anything, we just share revenue with them. They get to keep most of the money because they own the Ferris wheel and we get a portion of the money because they are here working within our market. It has been a good for the kids. We added a couple more things such as the snow tube ride and they love that. We are trying to make it more family friendly.”
Visitors can expect over 40 unique crafts, clothing and food vendors. The ice-skating rink is the largest outdoor rink in Alabama. Warming booths, stations and buildings are available to keep guests comfortable. Kids can get their pictures made with Santa Claus and enjoy crafts at the Kinderplatz, and the Christkindl Express train station travels around the market.
Continued Jacobs, “Last year we opened a few days all day long towards the end. Today is Thursday, December the 12, and typically we would close after the weekend on Sunday. We continue to stay open until Dec. 23. This gives people more opportunities to come out during the week when it’s not as crowded as it is on the weekends. School gets out so they can travel a little bit better. We will see how that works. We are already looking towards next year and how we can make it a little bit bigger because of the size of the crowds.”
