CULLMAN, Ala. – Orie Shannon McDearmond of Cullman on Wednesday, Dec. 11, received two 99-year sentences in connection to a shooting at Cullman Funeral Home in February 2023. Sentenced by Cullman County Circuit Court Judge Gregory Nicholas, McDearmond, who was 33 at the time of the incident, will serve the sentences concurrently.
McDearmond was found guilty of two counts of attempted murder back in September 2024. Two counts of first-degree assault were dropped.
Court officials said restitution in the case was already covered by Alabama Crime Victims Compensation Fund, and was not part of the sentencing.
Cullman County District Attorney Champ Crocker said he is very pleased with the sentencing.
“Orie McDearmond is as dangerous as they come,” Crocker said. “At sentencing today he showed zero remorse; if anything he acted proud of shooting these victims. The Court sentenced him to 99 years, and deservedly so.”
On Feb. 13, 2023, Cullman County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Cullman Police Department officers responded to a 911 call from Cullman Funeral Home. Upon arrival, McDearmond was detained in relation to the shootings of two victims inside, reportedly in relation to a family dispute.
The victims, Buford and Mitzie Wood, suffered non-life threatening injuries.
