Obituary: Thomas Franklin Griggs

Thomas Franklin Griggs, age 83, of West Point, Alabama passed away on Saturday, December 7, 2024. 

Tommy was born May 2, 1941, in Cullman, Alabama to the late Allen and Laura (Harbison) Griggs. He was a graduate of West Point High School in 1959. He married Sandra Swann on September 14, 1967, and they were married 57 years. He and Sandra had 6 children together. He was a lifelong resident and pillar in his community of West Point. Through the years he had many occupations and businesses including insulating and cleaning out chicken house, a dairy farmer, and selling restaurant and grocery store equipment. The business that he was most well known for was The Smoker Restaurant at West Point and Trimble that he ran with his wife Sandra for 20 plus years. Not only was he known for his BBQ and his love to shoot the bull with the customers, but most will remember him by the signature captains’ hat that he wore daily. He was a member of West Point Baptist Church. He loved his family and friends and was proud of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchild. 

He is survived by his wife Sandra (Swann), his son’s William (Deanna), Paul (Melony), Samuel (Mary Beth), Matthew (Erica), daughter Joy Beth, grandchildren Aaron, Grace, Kailei, Jake, Brandon, Erik, Hayley, Emma, Jacie, Jalee, Brody, and Mason, great-grandchild Knox Parker, brother Red (Pat), and many nieces and nephews. 

He is preceded in death by his daughter Elizabeth Ann, granddaughter Emilee Ann, parents Allen and Laura, brother David (Joyce), and his sister Becky. 

A celebration of life visitation for Tommy will be held Tuesday, December 10, 2024 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Moss Service Funeral Home, followed by a celebration of life funeral service Wednesday, December 11, 2024 at 2 p.m. at West Point Baptist Church, 140 County Road 1242, Cullman, AL 35057. Tommy will lie-in-state from 1:00 pm until the time of the service. 

Tommy will be laid to rest in Ebenezer Cemetery, 2245 County Road 1242, Vinemont, Alabama 35179. 

He will be missed, but this is not a goodbye just a see you later.
