Bobby Layne Duren, 88, passed away Friday, December 6, 2024 at his home in the New Hope community near Holly Pond after a long illness. A graveside service for family and friends will be held Saturday, December 14, at 12 p.m. at New Hope No. 2 Baptist Church with Brother Herman Lambert presiding. The church will provide a meal service for family and friends afterwards.
Mr. Duren was preceded in death by his parents, Flossie and Raymond Duren, brothers Jimmy and Raymond Duren, sisters Juanita Johnson, Dorothy Veal and Doris Vaughn, daughter Cynthia Alexander, and son Brian Abbott. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Onzelle Hays Duren, sister-in-law Betty Duren, step-sons Ron Akers (Vicki) and Terry Abbott, 11 grandchildren: Britt Akers, Andrea Allen, Christopher Boroff, Robyn Scott, Francie Gordon, Heidi Dilorenzo, Jason Abbott, Lane Abbott, Zachary Abbott, Wyatt Abbott, Tyler Abbott; eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
He retired as a Lieutenant with the Livonia (Michigan) Police Department after a distinguished 27-year career in law enforcement. He loved his church and the church family, and he served for many years as a deacon at New Hope Church.
The family would like to express special thanks to ExpectCare Hospice for the medical care provided over the past year, and our gratitude for the many prayers and visits from church and community members.
