MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Alabama House of Representatives Majority Leader Scott Stadthagen, R-Hartselle, on Wednesday announced that Rep. Randall Shedd, R-Fairview, has been presented with the House Republican Caucus’ “Iron Award,” which is given to GOP representatives whose words, deeds and actions build teamwork and help colleagues reach their full potential.
Voted on by members of the House Republican Caucus, the “Iron Award” is based on the biblical verse in Proverbs 27:17, which reads, “Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.”
“Rep. Shedd always stands ready to offer his fellow Republican House members an encouraging word, optimistic advice and a simple, everyday kindness whenever possible,” Stadthagen said. “This award demonstrates that he has earned the trust, confidence and admiration of the House Republican Caucus members, and he provides a strong example for others to follow.”
Shedd, who serves as the House majority whip responsible for counting votes on upcoming bills and measures and communicating with Republican members on the chamber floor, said he was touched and humbled by the recognition.
“Some people say grown men aren’t supposed to cry, but when I was told I would receive this award, this old man’s eyes watered,” Shedd said. “As legislators of a supermajority, we have a rare opportunity to make life better for our neighbors and the people of Alabama, so let’s not waste a minute.”
Prior to his election to the Alabama House in a 2013 special election, Shedd served as chairman of the Cullman County Commission and as mayor of Fairview, Alabama. A retired director of the Cullman County Commission on Aging, he currently chairs the House Transportation, Utilities and Infrastructure Committee.
Shedd is the second recipient of the “Iron Award,” which has become an annual presentation within the House Republican Caucus. Rep. Alan Baker, R-Brewton, received the inaugural award upon its establishment last year.
