FAIRVIEW, Ala. – This month’s Fairview Town Council meeting was called to order by Mayor Keith Henry and opened with an invocation by Councilwoman Julie Grimes on Monday, Dec. 2.
New business opened with Stanley Graham addressing the council in hopes of abolishing the alley located at Butler Street and Welcome Road. Graham made this request in order to be able to install a septic tank on his property and potentially welcome a new business to the community as a result. The pipes for this septic tank would need to cross the alley in order to be installed, thus the request to abolish this unused area of land. The council made and approved a motion to abolish the alley. It was approved unanimously.
In other news, the council discussed progress toward the new town park. A motion was made and approved to accept Community Consultants as the grant writer for the project. Applications for an engineering service for the project were also discussed. The council decided that appointment will be made at the next monthly session once the council has had time to review the resumes of both companies.
Lastly, a motion was made by Councilman Steve Edelman to install “No Parking” signs on Wesley Avenue. The purpose of this, he said, would be to protect private property from illegal parking, especially during community events held at the park.
Grimes recused herself from the vote, having a vested interest as a member of the community that road services. “As a citizen I would like to say to you I don’t want a bunch of signs in my yard, but I do want the Town to do a better job,” she said. “As a Town, if we are going to let them have an event there, it needs to be a safe event and people don’t need to park there.”
The motion did not pass, and deliberation about additional, alternative parking is now under consideration.
The next Fairview Town Council meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Jan. 6, 2025, at Fairview Town Hall located at 7525 Alabama Highway 69.
