VINEMONT, Ala. — The West Point Warriors traveled a short distance to Vinemont to take on the Eagles in a pair of county matchups Tuesday night and they split their varsity games. In the varsity girls’ game, it was an exciting game from the start, and in the end, the Lady Eagles held on to defeat the Lady Warriors 56-54. In the boys’ game, West Point dominated from start to finish and ended up cruising past Vinemont 72-37.
Vinemont 56 – West Point 54 (Varsity Girls)
Vayda Yarbrough drilled a pair from the line to put Vinemont on the scoreboard first. A driving layup by Reagan Robinson, a free throw by Carley Stephens, and a three from the left corner by Caroline Miller gave the Lady Eagles an 8-2 lead early in the first quarter. Camryn Faulkner drained a three from the left wing, and a rebound and putback by Kealie Harbison cut West Point’s deficit to 10-8. Later in the first, Harbison knocked down a trey from the left wing to make it 12-11, and a pair of free throws by Caitlee Simmons tied the game up at 13. Arleigh Thomason split her free throws, and Morgan Flanagan put in a basket in the paint to give Vinemont a 16-13 lead after one.
A pair of baskets by Thomason and Brooklyn Yarbrough gave the Lady Eagles a 20-16 lead early in the second. A pair of treys by Jaelyn Faulkner and a short jumper by Harbison gave the Lady Warriors a 24-20 lead. Robinson and Simmons each traded threes to keep the score at four at 27-23. Vinemont finished the first half strong, as Addison Holcomb hit a shot down low, then Miller and Flanagan followed that up with a pair of threes to give them the lead right back at 31-27. A late basket by Jaelyn Faulkner cut it to 31-29 going into the locker room.
A basket by Vayda Yarbrough, followed by a pair of Stephens free throws, stretched their lead to 35-31 almost midway through the third quarter. Simmons knocked down a layup, Fell drained a trey, and Laklin Shadix drilled a pair from the line to give West Point the lead once again at 38-37. Robinson hit a pair of late baskets for the Lady Eagles, as they took a 41-38 lead into the final period.
A rebound and putback by Shadix made it a 41-40 game, but Flanagan put in a three from the right corner and Robinson put in a basket in the paint to increase Vinemont’s lead to 47-42. Shadix’s second rebound and putback of the quarter trimmed it to 47-44, and she later scored through a foul and ended up hitting the free throw to make it 49-47 with 4:25 remaining in the game. Fell scored in the paint to tie the game up at 49, but a pair of baskets by Robinson and Holcomb gave Vinemont a 53-49 lead. Another basket by Shadix made it 53-51 with less than two minutes to go in the contest. A big three by Jaelyn Faulkner cut it to 55-54. After Robinson split her free throws to make it 56-54, West Point’s last chance to win the game fell just wide of the basket, Vinemont ended up defeating West Point 56-54.
Robinson led the way for Vinemont (6-2) with 18 points. Flanagan added 10 points, and Miller ended up with eight points. For West Point (8-2), Shadix finished with 16 points. Jaelyn Faulkner posted 11 points. Fell ended up with eight points and Simmons put up seven points.
West Point 72 – Vinemont 37 (Varsity Boys)
Jaxon Shelton drilled a short jumper, Maddox Chapman put in a basket in the paint, and a steal and layup by Jay Lamar gave West Point an early 6-0 lead. Colton Gillis’ floater put Vinemont on the board, but Cade Welborn drilled a three from the left corner, and Chapman added another basket in the paint to increase the Warrior lead to 12-2. Baskets by Gillis and Cheston Wilhite made it a 12-6 game, but Lamar put in a floater and a rebound and putback by Asa Sutter gave West Point a 16-6 lead late in the first. Lamar drilled a three from the top of the key, and Welborn added a basket of his own to make it a 21-7 game going into the second.
West Point would continue to add onto their lead. Shelton drained a trey to give them a 24-7 lead, but baskets each by Gillis and Wilhite cut it to 26-11. Shelton knocked down a shot in the paint, then Chapman put in two straight baskets, including a dunk, and a short jumper by Sutter stretched the Warrior lead to 34-11. A rebound and putback by Sutter, a basket in the paint by Nolan Franklin, and a rebound and putback of his own by Welborn made it a 40-16 game. West Point would take a commanding 40-18 lead into the locker room.
Welborn put in a long-range shot, and baskets by Chapman, Shelton, and Franklin gave the Warriors a 49-20 lead. Baskets by Gillis, Banks Borwick, and Gavin Pace made it a 51-26 game, but back-to-back three-point plays by Lamar stretched West Point’s lead to 58-26. The Warriors would take a 58-28 lead into the fourth quarter. It was run under a hot clock, and the Warriors would on to cruise past Vinemont, 72-37.
Chapman led the way for West Point (7-2) with 18 points. Lamar wasn’t too far behind with 16 points. Welborn collected 10 points. Shelton posted nine points, and Franklin finished with eight points.
Gillis finished with 13 points for Vinemont (3-6). Wilhite added 10 points and Parr posted seven points.
West Point will head home to take on Boaz Thursday while Vinemont will host J.B. Pennington on Friday.
