BREMEN, Ala. – Cold Springs returned home for a pair of varsity matchups against Cordova Tuesday night and both Eagle squads collected wins. The Lady Eagles jumped out to a big lead early and pulled away late to earn a 70-35 win over Cordova and in the boys’ game, the Eagles outscored the Blue Devils 36-25 in the second half on their way to a 58-47 win.
Cold Springs 70 – Cordova 35 (Varsity Girls)
Ella Dickerson scored Cold Springs’ first eight points the first eight points of the night to give the Lady Eagles an early, 8-1 lead. Paizley Whitlow turned a steal into an easy layup to make it 10-1 and on the next possession, she knocked down a three to stretch the lead to 13-1. Aleah Addison drove to the rim and scored to make it a 15-1 game with three minutes remaining in the first and Kenady Graves scored seven points in the final minutes of the first help build a 24-3 Cold Springs lead at the start of the second.
Graves split a pair of free throws and Baylee Perdue drilled a three-pointer to make it 28-5 early in the second quarter. Graves laid another one in to keep the Lady Eagles in front 30-9 midway through the period but an 8-0 run by Cordova trimmed the lead to 30-17. However, Dickerson knocked down another three and split a pair of free throws in the final minute of the half to give Cold Springs a 34-17 lead at the break.
Williams scored inside and Dickerson drilled a pair of threes to make it 42-17 early in the third quarter. Addison knocked down a pair of threes and Holly Bruer laid one in to keep Cold Springs in front 50-21 but the Lady Blue Devils were able to put together a run and cut the lead to 51-30 by the start of the fourth.
Bruer buried a three and Williams scored inside to make it a 56-34 game early in the fourth quarter. Avery Gerstman nailed a three from the top of the key and Graves drained another trey from the right corner to stretch the lead to 63-34 with four minutes to play. Macie Huffstutler sank a pair of free throws to put the Lady Eagles up 30 with just over three minutes on the clock. Perdue scored the final four points for Cold Springs to put the finishing touches on a 70-35 win.
Dickerson led the Lady Eagles with 19 points in the win, followed by Graves with 14, Addison with eight and Perdue with seven.
Cold Springs 58 – Cordova 47 (Varsity Boys)
Nic Fallin knocked down a three from the right corner to give Cold Springs a 3-2 lead early in the first quarter. Breydon Hallmon tipped one in midway through the period to keep the Eagles in front 5-2 and Fallin drove to the basket and scored to make it 7-2. Later in the first, Ayden Black took a steal the other way for an easy basket to make it a 9-5 game going into the second quarter.
Fallin drained another three and Black laid one in to keep Cold Springs ahead 14-10 midway through the second quarter. Bailey Gann hit a pair of free throws to maintain a 17-15 lead later in the period and after another bucket from Black, Gann buried a three to make it 22-20. Cordova was able to score one more time on the other end to tie things up at 22 going into the halftime break.
Black sank a pair of free throws and Hallmon scored inside to keep the Eagles ahead 26-24 early in the third. Matt Williams drove to the rim for a bucket and Fallin drilled a three to make it 31-29. Black laid one in to give Cold Springs a 33-29 lead midway through the third quarter and another score from Hallmon made it 35-29. After splitting a pair of free throws, Black knocked down a three stretch the lead to 10 with two minutes remaining in the period. Fallin added a late free throw and Ethan Day scored in the final seconds of the third to put Cold Springs in front 42-31 at the start of the fourth.
Black nailed a three from the right corner to get the final frame started and baskets by Fallin, Hallmon and Day extended the lead to 51-38 with five minutes to play. Day hit a pair of free throws to make it a 15-point game midway through the fourth quarter and the Eagles fended off a late push from the Blue Devils to secure a 58-47 win.
Black led Cold Springs with 19 points in the win. Fallin finished just behind him with 17 and Hallmon added eight.
Cold Springs will be back on its home court Friday night to host Cornerstone.
