HANCEVILLE, Ala. – The 42nd annual Hanceville Thanksgiving Tournament resumed at Lane Horton Gymnasium Tuesday, and we wrapped up day two with a pair of local battles. Good Hope raced past Vinemont 75-32 to advance to the tournament finals and Hanceville’s come from behind effort against Corner fell short, 60-47.

Good Hope 75 – Vinemont 32 (Varsity Boys)

Gavin Pace found his shooting stroke early for Good Hope, as he drilled a trio of treys to give them a quick 9-0 lead. E.J. Sharpe knocked down a floater, and Colton Gillis scored in the paint to put Vinemont on the board, as that cut it to 9-4. The Raiders continued their red-hot shooting from deep, as Pace, Jacob Haynes, and Tyler Cone each drilled a three to stretch Good Hope’s lead to 18-4. Sharpe put one in from deep to cut the Eagle deficit to 11 at 18-7, but Tucker Malin scored in the paint to make it a 20-7 game going into the second period.

Will Conquest scored down low to cut it to 20-9, and later on, he added a rebound and putback to make it 23-11. A free throw by Cheston Wilhite cut it to 23-12, but it was all Raiders after that. Haynes banked in a floater, and Cone put in a shot in the paint to make it 27-12. Haynes ended up scoring the next eight points for Good Hope, and Pace drilled another long-range shot to extend the lead to 38-14. Haynes drained a three from the left corner, and the Raiders would take a commanding 41-16 lead into the locker room.

Gillis drained a three to make it a 41-19 game, but Kye McSwain answered right back with one of his own on the other end, and that shot started another big run for Good Hope. Two free throws and a three by Malin, and baskets by Dalton Patrick and McSwain gave Good Hope a 56-19 lead. Five points by Cone and Pace’s sixth three of the game made it a 64-24 game going into the final quarter. The fourth was run under a hot clock, and Good Hope would go on to defeat Vinemont 75-32 to move on to the championship game.

Pace led the way for Good Hope (3-0) with 18 points. Haynes wasn’t too far behind with 16 points. Cone put up 12 points, while Malin and McSwain each posted 10 points.

For Vinemont (3-4), Conquest and Gillis each finished with seven points and Sharpe added five points.

Corner 60 – Hanceville 47 (Varsity Boys)

A driving layup by Peyton Twilley put Hanceville on the scoreboard first, but five straight points by Corner gave them a 5-2 lead. The Yellow Jackets later made it 7-3, but a rebound and putback by Dalton Pirkle and a trey by Twilley gave the Bulldogs an 8-7 lead. A short jumper by Ashton Hurst kept Hanceville’s lead at one at 10-9, but Corner scored the next seven points to get the lead right back at 16-10. Sam Abney put in a floater to make it a 16-12 game after one.

Drake Bentley drilled a pair from the line to cut it to 16-14 early in the second, but a 7-2 run by the Yellow Jackets gave them a 23-16 lead. Bentley drilled a three from the left wing to cut it to 23-19, but Corner once again went on another big run, as that increased their lead to 33-19. A basket by Pirkle made it a 33-21 game, but Hanceville would find themselves down, 35-23, at the half.

Hanceville came out a completely different team to start out the third quarter. Twilley drained a three from the top of the key, then he and Pirkle each scored a basket after grabbing an offensive rebound, as they cut it to 37-30. Bentley went coast-to-coast for a layup to make it a 37-32 game. Abney put in a three from the right corner, then a basket by Twilley, followed by a steal and a layup by Bentley, tied the game up at 39 with less than four minutes to go in the third period. Later in the quarter, Gabriel Ognilla scored through a foul and completed the three-point play from the free throw line to give the Bulldogs their first lead since the first quarter at 42-41.

Six straight points by the Yellow Jackets gave them a 47-42 lead, but a pair of free throws by Brodie Brenner made it a 47-44 game going into the final period. Corner quickly stretched their lead to 52-44 early in the fourth, but a basket by Brenner made it a six-point game. The Yellow Jackets took over after that and ended up defeating Hanceville 60-47.
