PREP BASKETBALL: Hanceville Bulldogs, Lady Bulldogs collect wins over Meek

HANCEVILLE, Ala. — After splitting their games at Oneonta Thursday, the Hanceville Bulldogs returned home on Friday night to take on the Meek Tigers and Bulldog squads collected wins. In the girls’ game, Hanceville was able to pull away in the second half to defeat Meek 42-28 and in the boys’ game, the Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead and never gave it up, rolling to a 62-41 win over the Tigers.

Hanceville 42 – Meek 28 (Varsity Girls)

A quick basket by Aaliyah Twitty put Hanceville on the scoreboard first, then she later drilled a three from the left wing to give them an early 5-1 lead. Mckenzie Aaron added a layup, and Piper Butts put in a pair from the line to make it 9-1, but Meek finished the quarter on a 7-1 run to cut it to 10-8 going into the second period.

Alex Twitty put in a basket to start the second quarter, and Aaron drilled a long jumper to make it 14-8. Aaliyah Twitty scored five straight points to increase the Lady Bulldog lead to 19-10. Kynzlee Farr hit a long-range shot and Aaron put in a shot to push their lead to 24-10, but the Lady Tigers made a late push to trim it to 24-17 at the half.

Meek cut it to 24-19 to start the third period, but a pair of free throws by Alex Twitty and a rebound and putback by Aaliyah Twitty made it 28-19. A pair of late baskets by Kerrigon Moore and a free throw by Madeline Watwood gave Hanceville a 33-21 lead going into the final quarter. Baskets by Aaliyah Twitty and Moore pushed their lead to 37-21, and five straight points by Alex Twitty made it 42-25. Hanceville would go on to defeat Meek, 42-28, to improve to 3-2 on the season.

Aaliyah Twitty finished with 15 points for Hanceville. Alex Twitty added nine and Moore and Aaron each posted six.

Hanceville 62 – Meek 41 (Varsity Boys)

Hanceville started out the game really strong, as four straight points by Peyton Twilley, and a three by Drake Bentley from the right corner, gave them a quick 7-0 lead. A floater by Samuel Abney, and a basket by Ashton Hurst, pushed the Bulldog lead to 11-3. Gabriel Ognilla put in a layup, and Twilley drilled a trey from the right wing to make it a 17-6 game going into the second quarter.

Baskets by Abney and Bentley gave Hanceville a 21-8 lead early in the second period. Meek cut it to 22-11, but Hurst drilled a three from the top of the key to make it 25-11. Abney added a rebound and putback, and Ognilla knocked down a three from the right corner to give the Bulldogs a 30-17 lead at the half.

The Tigers cut it to 30-20 to start the third quarter, but Abney got fouled after hitting a three. He drilled the free throw to make it 34-20, then he collected a steal and found Bentley down low for a basket, plus the foul. Bentley drilled the free throw to quickly swell the Bulldog lead to 37-20. Threes by Kingsley Brown and Ognilla made it a 46-31 game late in the third. Hurst put in a basket, Ognilla hit a layup after forcing a turnover, and Brown knocked down a floater to give Hanceville a 54-35 lead going into the final period.

Dalton Pirkle threw down a dunk in the fourth quarter, and Brodie Brenner and Twilley each added baskets as well, as Hanceville ended up defeating Meek, 62-41, to improve to 2-3 on the season.

Bentley led the way for the Bulldogs with 13 points. Twilley added 11 points. Ognilla and Abney posted 10 points, and Hurst finished with eight points.

The Bulldogs will now turn their attention to the upcoming Hanceville Thanksgiving Tournament beginning on Monday.
