FAIRVIEW, Ala. – The Fairview Aggies returned home on Tuesday night to take on the Vinemont Eagles in a pair of county games and both Fairview teams collected wins. In the girls’ game, Fairview pulled away late in the second half to defeat Vinemont 50-40 and in the boys’ game, the Aggies raced past the Eagles 74-40.
Fairview 50 – Vinemont 40 (Varsity Girls)
A tough basket down low by Davis Stidham put Fairview on the scoreboard first, but a pair of free throws by Morgan Flanagan and a trey by Caroline Miller gave Vinemont a 5-2 lead. Later on in the first quarter, Vayda Yarbrough drilled a three from the top of the key to make it a 9-5 game, but a basket on the other end by Peyton Defoor cut it to 9-7. Reagan Robinson knocked down a short jumper, and Addison Holcomb hit a shot in the paint to stretch Vinemont’s lead to 14-7 late in the first, but Stidham hit a trey to make it a 14-10 game going into the second quarter.
Defoor hit a basket, and Maci Gregory drilled a pair of free throws to tie the game up at 14 early in the second. Both teams traded baskets on their next possession, then a short jumper by Flanagan gave the Lady Eagles an 18-16 lead. Kailyn Redding and Stidham each hit a driving layup, and Darby Nichols later hit a basket to give the Lady Aggies a 22-20 lead. Lexi Golden and Stidham each hit a pair of free throws to end the first half, and Fairview went into the locker room with a 26-22 advantage over Vinemont.
Stidham drilled a trey, and Nichols later added a basket to stretch the Lady Aggie lead to 31-22 early in the third. Five straight points by Miller cut it to 33-27 late in the quarter, but a field goal by Redding and a pair of Quick free throws gave Fairview a 38-29 lead going into the fourth quarter. Defoor drilled a long-range shot, and Quick added a pair from the line to increase the Lady Aggie lead to 43-29. Vinemont, though, started to cut into the Fairview lead. Miller and Robinson scored the next seven points for Vinemont, as they cut it to 43-36 with a little over five minutes remaining in the game.
A pair of baskets by Nichols pushed the Lady Aggie lead up to nine at 47-38, but a basket on the other end by Miller trimmed it to 47-40 with less than three minutes remaining i the contest. A free throw by Nichols, plus a pair by Stidham, gave Fairview the 50-40 win over Vinemont.
Stidham led Fairview (4-0) with 14 points in the win. Quick posted 11 points, Nichols added nine, and Defoor put in seven. For Vinemont (2-1), Miller finished with 14 points. Robinson collected nine points, and Flanagan added six.
Fairview 74 – Vinemont 40 (Varsity Boys)
Calin Collins hit a basket down low, and Landun Smith added a pair of baskets as well to give Fairview a quick 6-0 lead. Cheston Wilhite hit a shot in the paint and Gavin Parr drilled a three to cut it to 6-5, but Blake Rickard knocked down a short jumper and Carson Jones later added a basket to make it a 11-5 lead for the Aggies. A steal and a layup by Gee Flores cut the Vinemont deficit to just four at 11-7, but Rickard hit a long-range shot from the top of the key to give Fairview a 14-7 lead after one.
Flores hit a basket to cut it to 14-9 early in the second, but Collins scored six straight points, and Zayden Cruce drilled a short jumper to stretch the Aggie lead to 22-9. Banks Borwick stopped the bleeding with a basket, but Smith and Jones each hit a basket in the paint to make it 27-11. Collins hit another shot in the paint, and A.J. Wood scored through a foul and completed the three-point play to give Fairview a 32-15 lead. William Conquest scored through a foul and made the free throw, then Flores and Conquest each added a basket in the paint to cut the Vinemont deficit to 35-23. Smith hit a basket to end the first half for Fairview, as they took a 37-23 lead into the locker room.
Collins drilled a three and Cruce later added a basket in the paint to give the Aggies a 44-23 lead in the third quarter. Baskets by Jones, Kolt Redding, and Collins made it 50-25. Collins hit two more baskets in the quarter, and Ty Dunn added one of his own, as Fairview took a 57-27 lead into the final period. Rickard, Dunn, and Smith helped the Aggies stretch their lead to 67-31, and the Aggies would go on to collect a 74-40 win over the Eagles.
Collins led the way for Fairview (3-1) with 19 points. Smith wasn’t too far behind with 16, and Jones added 10 points. For Vinemont (1-2), Conquest and Flores each finished with eight points.
Fairview will travel to take on West Point and Vinemont will return home to face Falkville Thursday night.
