HANCEVILLE, Ala. – Around 2,000 Cullman, Blount and Winston County eighth graders visited the Wallace State Community College campus on Thursday, Nov. 14, for the Wallace State Center for Career & Workforce Development’s annual Tools of the Trade Career Fair.
Said Cullman Area Chamber of Commerce President Joey Orr, “This is an annual event that was put on by Wallace State, Cullman Area Chamber of Commerce, (the) Cullman Economic Development (Agency), Cullman County Economic Development and really, the whole community, because the vendors are people within this community. This is a job experience for eighth graders in Cullman County, Blount County and Winston County.”
Students rotated around five locations on the Wallace State campus. The Simulation Center inside the School of Nursing and Science Center gave them a realistic hospital experience. The Dr. William F. Peinhardt Conference Center held different career choice booths for students to explore. The Center for Welding Technology and Innovation Center had information available about computer science, agriculture, tool tech and more. Along College Drive and the track, students could climb on heavy equipment, learn about the road department and Sprout Fiber Internet. And at Tom Drake Coliseum, funeral home and cosmetics information was available outside, with additional career tables inside.
Cullman Middle School eighth-grade student Lucy Collins said, “This has helped me because I’ve always had my mind set on one thing, so it has opened my mind to anything else that I have wanted to do. It has taught me what the day will look like if I go into that career.”
