CULLMAN, Ala. – On Wednesday, Nov. 13, two Cullman County commissioners and the chairman were sworn in for their new terms in office. District 3 Commissioner Kelly Duke and District 4 Commissioner Corey Freeman were sworn in by Cullman County District Judge Chad Floyd. Chairman Jeff Clemons was sworn in by Cullman County Sheriff Matt Gentry.

Shortly afterward, an organizational meeting was held.

“The reason we have the organizational meeting is that eight days after the (Nov. 5 General) election, by law, the commission has to meet to organize, set their schedule, meetings, go over rules and procedure…,” said Cullman County Administrator John Bullard.

Freeman was elected for a second term and said he has plans for Smith Lake’s Big Bridge.

“We’ve got some major projects such as Big Bridge on County Road 222, and that’s a major project. It’s probably about a $25 million project that I’m passionate about and I am working on every day,” he said.

Freeman said he’d also like to see changes to how the gas tax is distributed. “Gas tax is funded by population not road miles. Cullman gets very little gas tax because we only have 90,000 citizens. Jefferson County gets the majority of the gas tax, because they are the largest county of citizens. That being said, we have more road miles that we maintain than Jefferson County, so the funding doesn’t add up.”
