FAIRVIEW, Ala. – After capping the regular season undefeated a week ago, the Fairview Aggies were back home at Dafford Smith Stadium Friday night to kick off the 5A playoffs against Carver-Birmingham. Fairview went into the locker room leading 9-6 at halftime and fended off the Rams in the second half to advance to round two with a 15-12 win.
A touchdown run put the Rams in front 6-0 midway through the first quarter but on the ensuing possession, a 3-yard touchdown run by Kolt Redding tied the game at 6 just before the start of the second. The Aggies drove the ball deep into Rams territory just before halftime and Redding knocked a field goal through the uprights in the final seconds of the quarter to give Fairview a 9-6 lead at the break.
Later in the third quarter, a 10-yard touchdown run by Jake Harper extended the Aggie lead to 15-6 midway through the period. However, a Carver touchdown pass on the following possession trimmed the lead to 15-12 with 3:29 to play in the third.
The Rams put together another good drive later in the quarter but an interception by Redding cut the scoring opportunity short and gave the ball back to the Aggies. Leading 15-12 with three minutes remaining in the game, Fairview’s defense stopped the Rams on fourth down to preserve the lead and made one more stop in the final minute to secure a 15-12 win and a spot in round two.
The Aggies will be back home next week to host Leeds.
