CULLMAN, Ala. – Veterans with Christ will host the inaugural Fishing with Veterans event at Smith Lake Park on Monday, Nov.11, from 1-5 p.m. The event is free for all veterans and their families and offers veterans a day on the lake, connecting with other veterans and volunteer anglers for an afternoon of fishing and fellowship.
Veterans interested in fishing are invited to bring a valid veteran ID. All participants must have a valid Alabama fishing license. The first 20 veterans who contact Veterans with Christ will secure a spot on a boat, with any additional trips depending on available fishing boats.
“Veterans with Christ (inaugural) Fishing with Veterans is a free community outreach event to connect local veterans with local fishermen, an opportunity to meet other veterans, and time to experience the joy of fishing on beautiful Lewis Smith Lake,” according to the event flyer.
Local anglers are encouraged to volunteer boats and time to take a veteran fishing, creating more opportunities for veterans who wish to participate. Family members not joining the fishing trips can still enjoy the festivities onshore, which will feature live entertainment by Juice, a Marine veteran, and a variety of food offerings from the Food on the Fly food truck.
Additionally, organizers are looking for community members willing to bring extra rods and reels who are willing to teach children basic fishing skills while on-site. Veteran support groups and community organizations are welcome to attend to lend their support or even join a fishing trip with a veteran.
For more information or to register, veterans and anglers should contact Zack Ingram at 360-480-4939. For more information on Veterans with Christ, contact Larry Burns at 205-842-6541. Smith Lake Park is located at 403 County Road 386, Cullman, AL 35057.
