‘This is going to be an exciting night of several fun and educational things going on’
JONES CHAPEL, Ala. – The Jones Chapel Volunteer Fire Department will host a Halloween trick or treating event from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 31, while supplies last. Fire Chief Clint Thrasher said spectators are also welcome to watch firefighters train in the Alabama Fire College Mobile Burn Trailer at the same time on Halloween night.
“Thursday we will have several different things going on. We will be giving out candy and plastic fire hats to kids, while supplies last, and we will also be running our Fire Safety House to talk to kids about smoke detectors and how to evacuate their houses in the event of a fire,” Thrasher said. “We also invite our guests to watch while firefighters are training in the Alabama Fire College Mobile Burn Trailer.”
Thrasher said the department has given out candy for many years and recently added the trailer to the event.
“We requested the mobile burn trailer and it just so happens that Halloween week is when we received it, so we thought it would be fun to allow the public to watch some actual live fire training,” he said. “We budget every year to buy candy for Halloween and several parades throughout the year. This is going to be an exciting night of several fun and educational things going on.”
Thrasher said he wants to recognize the volunteers who dedicate countless hours to train to better serve the community.
“The last two years we had over 2,000 training hours per year as a department,” he said. “Additionally, our members spend hundreds of hours preparing for events such as community day, fire prevention, Halloween, etc. These men and women deserve recognition for all that they do. We answer approximately 400 emergency calls throughout the year in addition to all the training that is done. All these things are done with zero financial compensation.”
