CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman’s active community has a new home for pickleball with the recent opening of covered courts at the Donald E. Green Active Adult Center. A recent ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the opening of the new courts and was met with an enthusiastic crowd, including Cullman City Council members, Mayor Woody Jacobs, the Park Board and eager players of all ages. Highlighting the event was special guest Jonny Andrews, a Top 50 pickleball professional, who brought added excitement to the day.

Cullman Parks, Recreation & Sports Tourism Executive Director Nathan Anderson expressed gratitude for the support that made the courts possible, particularly from City leaders and the Park Board.

“We’re incredibly grateful for the support of the city council and mayor in recognizing the growing need for pickleball courts in our area,” Anderson said. “Pickleball is a sport that truly brings people together, spanning all ages and skill levels. Having covered courts available is a special feature that many communities don’t have, and it’s something we’re proud to offer here in Cullman.”

Pickleball is a rapidly growing sport combining elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong.

“It’s easy to pick up but offers plenty of challenge, making it popular with people of all ages,” Anderson explained. “Whether you’re looking for a fun way to stay active or a competitive outlet, pickleball is a fantastic choice for fitness and fun.”

The decision to place the new courts at the Active Adult Center was intentional. With a large number of senior participants, the center’s proximity to existing courts at Ingle Park and ample parking nearby, the location was ideal. “The available parking and space worked out beautifully,” Anderson said.

Anderson shared plans for potential future expansion as the sport gains further momentum locally. “We’re excited to see the enthusiasm for pickleball continue to grow in our community. As the need arises, we are hopeful to expand with more courts, located within the (planned) Omni Sports District.”

The courts will be open from 6 a.m.-10 p.m. daily, following Ingle Park’s operating hours. Currently, players need to bring their own paddles and balls, as no equipment rentals are offered on-site.

Jacobs emphasized the community impact of the new courts. “It’s great to see community members of all ages enjoying a sport that’s bringing people together,” he said. “We’re proud to support this addition, which will serve as a hub of activity for years to come.”

The Active Adult Center is located at 1625 Cleveland Ave. SW.
