CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman Bearcats have been celebrating homecoming throughout the week and they capped off the festivities with a dominant, 61-6 performance against Columbia Friday night.

With Cullman leading 7-6 early in the first quarter, Asher Drake returned a kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown to put the ‘Cats in front 14-6 midway through the first quarter. An Eagles fumble was recovered by Kamron Myers on the ensuing possession and set up Cullman’s offense with great field position. A few plays later, Cooper Loftin punched one into the end zone from 2 yards out to make it a 21-6 game with just under three minutes to play in the first. After scoring on offense and special teams, it was time for the Bearcats’ defense to get some points on the board on the next possession. Columbia fumbled near its own goal line and Tucker Perry recovered the ball in the end zone for a touchdown to extend the lead to 28-6 in the final two minutes of the opening quarter.

After hitting Hudson Wilhite on a deep ball down the Cullman sideline for a big gain, quarterback Preston Gray capped off a scoring drive a few plays later with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Wilhite that made it 35-6 with 8:28 to play in the first half. A fumble on the ensuing kickoff was recovered by Troy Mann and Loftin scored from 5 yards out a few plays later to stretch the Cullman lead to 41-6 with seven minutes remaining in the second quarter.

The ’Cats forced a safety on defense to put two more points on the board, making it 43-6 midway through the second, and JD Ellerbee drilled a 26-yard field goal just before halftime to give Cullman a commanding, 46-6 lead at the break.

An interception by Braxton Brooks gave the Bearcats great field position midway through the third quarter and a touchdown pass from Landon Pitts to Cooper McSwain put Cullman on top 53-6. The final score of the night came on a 9-yard touchdown run by Weston Keel and put the finishing touches on a 61-6, homecoming win for the Bearcats.

Cullman improves to 4-4 with the win and the ‘Cats will be back on the road next week to take on Decatur.
