PREP FOOTBALL: Vinemont pulls away to down Hanceville 56-30

VINEMONT, Ala. – The Vinemont Eagles were back home to host a county clash with the Hanceville Bulldogs Friday night, and it was an exciting battle between these two local squads. The score was knotted at 24 at halftime but the Eagles outscored the Bulldogs 32-6 in the second half to pull away with a 56-30 win.

Hanceville received the opening kick-off and drove down the field but with a goal to go situation the Eagles defense stiffened, and the Bulldogs settled for a Dylan Lazzaro field goal to put Hanceville ahead 3-0 midway through the first quarter. The Eagles put together a drive of their own to take an 8-3 lead late in the quarter when Chad Reynolds scored from 9 yards out.

Hanceville regained the lead early in the second quarter when Hunter Black found Ashton Hurst for a 51-yard touchdown to put the Bulldogs ahead 10-8. Hanceville’s Eli Akin blocked a punt and returned it for an 18-yard touchdown to put the Bulldogs up 17-8 midway through the second quarter. Vinemont answered back when Gabriel Herrera raced in from 19 yards out to cut the lead to 17-16 with 4:53 remaining in the opening half. Hanceville’s Marquise Leeth returned the ensuing kick-off 82 yard to put the Bulldogs ahead 24-16. Late in the quarter Herrera scored from 2 yards out to tie the game at 24.

Vinemont received the ball to start the second half and drove down the field to take a 32-24 led on a 1-yard run by Herrera. Vinemont added to their lead late in the third quarter when Josh Rhodes scored from 21 yards out to put the Eagles ahead 40-24. Early in the fourth quarter the Bulldogs cut the lead to 40-30 on a 5-yard run by Leeth. Midway through the fourth quarter Vinemont’s Rush Sandlin put the Eagles up 48-30 on a 1-yard plunge.

Vinemont forced a punt on the next possession and added to the lead when Chase Blair raced in from 32 yards out to put the finishing touches on a 56-30 win for the Eagles.

Vinemont improves to 6-1 with the win and will be back home next week to face Gordo. Hanceville falls to 1-5 with the loss and the Bulldogs will be back home next week to play Midfield.
