HOLLY POND, Ala. – The Broncos enjoyed their bye last week, but they were back home on the field Friday night for a region matchup against Whitesburg Christian. Holly Pond led for nearly the entire game, but the Warriors scored a go-ahead touchdown in the final minute of the fourth quarter to complete the comeback and return home with a 25-24 win.

The Broncos struck first when Boston Gibbs scored on a 5-yard touchdown and Sawyer Olinger punched in the two-point conversion to take an 8-0 lead late in the first quarter. A field goal trimmed the lead to 8-3 early in the second quarter and that score held until both teams went into the locker room at the halftime break.

A 30-yard touchdown pass put the Warriors in front 11-8 early in the third quarter but Holly Pond responded early in the fourth when Olinger ran one into the end zone from 37 yards out. Olinger scored the two-point conversion as well to give the Broncos a 16-11 lead. Olinger’s next touchdown run added to the Holly Pond lead and Zayne Faulkner ran in the two-point conversion to make it a 24-11 game with 6:40 remaining.

However, that’s when the momentum began to shift for Whitesburg Christian. The Warriors scored with just over four minutes to play to cut the lead to 24-18 and later in the fourth, the Warriors scored on a 96-yard touchdown pass to pull ahead 25-24 with 58 seconds on the clock. The Broncos were unable to answer the late score, and Whitesburg Christian held on to complete a 25-24, comeback win over Holly Pond.

The Broncos drop to 2-4 with the loss and they’ll be on the road next week for a region game at Asbury.
