Obituary: James Kevin Shabel

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of James Kevin Shabel on September 24th. Kevin was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. He was born in Minot, North Dakota on October 26th, 1954 to the late James W. & Gussie Shabel. Throughout his childhood he lived in many different places before his family settled in the Cullman and Decatur area. He graduated from Good Hope High School in 1972. He owned & managed Cullman Pepsi Cola Distributorship. He married Kathy Hays Shabel on October 24th, 1981, & they were blessed with two children, Jonathan and Andrea. 

Throughout his career he was a loving contributor to many county-wide schools & organizations. He was very involved in the Cullman area by serving on numerous boards including the Chamber of Commerce, Cullman County Sports Hall of Fame, Cullman County Industrial Development Board, Cullman County and Cullman City Park and Rec, Cullman County Soil and Water Conservation. The Good Hope and Springhill community held a special place in his heart. He loved the great outdoors, especially fishing, hunting, and quarter horses. 

During Kevin’s life, many lives were touched by his compassion & giving nature which have left a lasting imprint on numerous hearts and the community. He will be missed by countless friends & family members because of his generosity and kindness. His witty sense of humor will be remembered by everyone. 

He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother Thomas “Tommy”. He is survived by his beloved wife Kathy of 43 years, son Jonathan (Mallory), daughter Andrea (Alex), and two grandsons Miller and Mac. His brothers Rodger, Terry, Scotty, Jason, and sister Debbie along with a host of nieces, nephews, and family. 

A celebration of life visitation for Kevin will be held Saturday, September 28, 2024 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at Moss-Service Funeral Home, 1901 2nd Avenue, N.W., Cullman, Alabama 35055, followed by a celebration of life funeral service at 2 p.m. 

Kevin will be laid to rest in New Hope #2, 15 County Road 1698, Cullman, AL. 

In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to Alabama Wildlife Federation, Cullman Caring for Kids or the American Heart Association.
