PREP VOLLEYBALL: Cullman falls to Bob Jones at home 3-0

CULLMAN, Ala. — The Cullman Lady Bearcats hosted Bob Jones for a non-area match Thursday night and unfortunately for the home crowd, The Lady Patriots left the gym with a 3-0 win over the Lady Bearcats.

Bob Jones jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the first set, but Cullman countered with three straight points of their own, including an ace from Ava Ray, to cut it to 4-3. The Lady Patriots quickly increased their lead to 9-4, but a point by Clementine Hollingsworth kept the deficit at five at 11-6. Bob Jones stretched their lead to 15-6, but the Lady Bearcats made a little run to get back in the game. A kill by Karina Harris was followed by an ace by LK Granger, and that helped cut it to 18-12. Later on, an ace by Blakely Brannon made it a 21-14 contest, but the Lady Patriots scored the final four points to take the first set, 25-14.

The second set was a lot closer than the first one. Bob Jones held a 6-2 lead early in the set, but Ray collected an ace to help make it a 6-5 game. Later on in the set, a kill by Brannon kept the deficit at one at 10-9. The Lady Patriots, though, scored the next five points to give them a 15-9 lead. Brannon collected a kill and an ace to cut it to 15-11, and later on, Lily Nixon and Ray each collected points to cut it to 16-14. Bob Jones held an 18-14 lead, but the Lady Bearcats, behind a point and an ace by Ray, rallied to tie the game up at 18. The Lady Patriots went on a 4-1 run to take a 22-19 lead. Another kill by Brannon made it a 22-20 game, but just like the first set, Bob Jones finished strong, as they scored the final three points to take the second set, 25-20.

Cullman held a 3-2 lead early in the third set on an ace by Granger, but five straight points by the Lady Patriots gave them a 7-3 lead. Bob Jones would later stretch their lead to 16-8. Later on in the set, a kill by Hollingsworth made it an 18-12 game, but they wouldn’t get any closer after that, as the Lady Patriots would go on to finish off their sweep of Cullman, 25-14, 25-20, and 25-17.

In the first set, Ray and Brannon each finished with an ace and a kill for Cullman. Harris added a kill. Granger collected an ace, and Hollingsworth added a point. In the second set, Ray finished with a pair of aces, a pair of points, and a kill, and Brannon added a trio of kills, an ace, and a point. In the third set, Brannon finished with a trio of points. Granger added an ace, and Hollingsworth collected a kill.

Cullman will compete at the Battle for Supreme Courts on Saturday.
