WEST POINT, Ala. – After heavy rainfall postponed West Point’s region matchup against Lawrence County Friday night, the Warriors and Red Devils were able to hit the turf at Cullman High School’s Oliver Woodard Stadium Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately for the West Point faithful braving the rain, it was all Lawrence County in this one, and the Red Devils left with a 40- 0 win over the Warriors.

West Point got the ball first to start out the game and behind back-to-back big runs by Hunter Hensley and Ollie Howell, the Warriors found themselves at the 42. Later on in that drive, a pass interference penalty put West Point at the 21. Their offense stalled after that and were forced to turn the ball over on downs. Lawrence County took the ball and went on a 79-yard, 13-play drive, which ended with a one-yard touchdown run, as that gave them a 7-0 lead with 2:24 remaining in the first quarter. Behind some big runs by Howell, the Warriors looked to get some points on the board. But a penalty quickly brought their drive to a halt, and they were forced to punt.

The Red Devils completed a big pass on third down to keep their drive alive, and a roughing the kicker penalty on West Point put them at the 44. Three plays later, they found the end zone on a 55-yard pass play to give them a 14-0 lead with 6:15 remaining in the first half. A pass interference penalty on Lawrence County kept the Warriors’ series alive but were quickly forced to punt three plays later. A pair of big plays by the Red Devils quickly had them at the 20, but the Warrior defense stiffened, and Lawrence County missed a field goal. West Point would go into the half trailing, 14-0.

The Warriors forced their first turnover of the game to start out the second half, as Rush Lamar recovered a Red Devil fumble at the 47, but West Point was forced to punt once again. The Warrior defense forced a punt of their own, and it ended up getting blocked, and Conner Crawford ended up getting the ball to the 33, putting them in excellent field position. West Point coughed the ball up three plays later though and Lawrence County recovered the fumble in the end zone. Once again, a pair of big plays by the Red Devils quickly put them at the 29. They ended up hitting a 45-yard field goal to make it 17-0 with 1:50 remaining in the third quarter.

After getting a first down on a pass from Hensley to Brayden Monfort, once again, the Warriors were quickly forced to punt. West Point got the ball back off a Red Devil punt, but Hensley got sacked in the end zone for a safety to stretch the Lawrence County lead to 19-0 early in the fourth quarter. The Red Devils scored on the first play of their next series, as a 45-yard touchdown pass made it 26-0. Lawrence County later added a 12-yard touchdown pass and a 10-yard touchdown run off a Warrior fumble, as West Point (0-4, 0-2) ended up getting shut out by the Red Devils in their second region game of the season, 40-0.

Howell finished with 91 yards on the ground for the Warriors. Lamar recovered a fumble, and Crawford recovered a blocked punt.

West Point will be off next week before traveling to play Hayden on Sept. 27.
