Our beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend Brenda Joan Holmes Scott of Cullman, Alabama passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at the age of 77 years old.

Brenda was born in Cullman, Alabama. She was the oldest daughter of Vera and Harden Wiggins. She is survived by her husband David Scott, her three daughters Kathy Pestona (Rob), Christina McLemore (Mike), Kelly Cornelius, son Richard Holmes and sister, Gloria Wise. Brenda is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Brenda was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leon Holmes; daughter, Teresa Murphree; grandson, Gregory Murphree; niece, Tabitha Denton; brother-in-law, Jim Wise; son-in -law, Jeff Cornelius and brothers Larry, Wayne, and Mike Wiggins.

Anyone who knew Brenda knew that she had a love for nursing. Even though she was a young, busy mother of five children, she decided to return to school to become a nurse. Brenda was one of the first students to attend Wallace State Community College Nursing Program.

While studying and raising her children she obtained her LPN license and later went back to school to become a RN. With Brenda’s demanding school and work schedule, she persevered as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, being sure to attend her children’s and grandchildren’s school events and sporting activities.

Brenda started her career at Woodland Hospital in 1980 and only retired when the hospital closed in 2009. She influenced and served as a mentor to the lives of many young nurses.

Brenda was a loving member of Pine Street Independent Baptist Church. Even when her health deteriorated to the point where she could no longer attend church, she watched church services online and shared her love for Jesus anyway she could.

Brenda was the true matriarch of her family. She gave so much of her life attending ballgames, cooking dinners, helping with homework, drying tears, bandaging knees, and teaching her family to never give up on their dreams no matter what life hands them. She was admired by many, and her legacy will live on in the hearts of her loved ones.

A celebration of life visitation for Brenda will be held Saturday, Sept. 14, 2024 from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. at Moss Service Funeral Home, 1901 2nd Avenue, NW, Cullman, Alabama 35055. A celebration of life funeral service will be held Sunday, Sept. 15, 2024 at 2 p.m. at Moss Service Funeral Home chapel.

Brenda will be laid to rest in Gum Pond Cemetery, Eva, AL.
