PREP VOLLEYBALL: Vinemont sweeps tri-match with Hanceville, Falkville

VINEMONT, Ala. – The Vinemont Lady Eagles hosted a tri-match against Hanceville and Falkville Tuesday night and the Eagles earned wins in both their matches. In the first match, Vinemont knocked off Hanceville in four sets. Falkville swept the Lady Bulldogs in two sets in the second match, and the Lady Eagles finished off the night by sweeping the Lady Blue Devils in two sets in the third match.

Vinemont 3 – Hanceville 1 (Match One) (28-30, 25-12, 25-20, 25-10)

A pair of early aces by Katie Twilley gave Hanceville a 3-1 lead in the first set, but Vinemont tied it up at four on an ace by Addison Holcomb. The Lady Bulldogs went on a big run to take a 12-6 lead and later held a 15-9 lead on a kill by Alex Twitty. The Lady Eagles, though, went on a rally to get back in the game, as a point and a kill by Stephens and an ace by Morgan Flanagan cut it to 15-14. Hanceville held a slim 18-15 lead, but that was the biggest lead that both teams would have the rest of the way. There were several ties, and whenever one team had a chance to clinch the win, the other team came back to tie it up. Vinemont held a 28-27 lead, but the Lady Bulldogs scored the final three points to take the first set in a wild one 30-28.

The Lady Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second set behind three aces by Mabri Smith. Another ace, this time, by Abby Kuykendall made it 7-1, and one later in the set by Caroline Miller pushed their lead to 10-3. Vinemont continued to add to their lead in the set, as back-to-back points by Stephens and a kill by Flanagan stretched their lead to 19-8. The lead didn’t get under double digits after that, as a point by Flanagan helped seal the 25-12 win to tie things up at one.

Back-to-back aces by Twilley gave Hanceville a 3-2 lead in the third set. The Lady Bulldogs held a slim 8-6 lead, but behind back-to-back aces by Flanagan, Vinemont took a 10-8 lead. It was tight for a few serves, but the Lady Eagles broke a 11-11 tie with four straight points, which included a point by Arleigh Thomason, back-to-back aces by Smith, and a kill by Stephens, to take a 15-11 lead. A point by Flanagan made it 20-16, but a point by Alex Twitty and an ace by Karys Henderson helped the Lady Bulldogs cut it to 20-19. Vinemont went on a late run and ended up taking the third set 25-20.

Vinemont got off to a red-hot start in the fourth set, as back-to-back aces by Smith and Stephens gave them a 6-1 lead. The lead continued to grow for the Lady Eagles, as Flanagan put in an ace, and Stephens collected back-to-back points to push their lead to 14-4. Smith added yet another ace, and Stephens and Jayden Friedrich each put in an ace as well, as Vinemont would go on to win the fourth set 25-10.

In the first set, Aaliyah Twitty and Alex Twitty each finished with a pair of kills and two points, and Twilley put in a pair of aces and a point in the win for Hanceville. For Vinemont, Stephens finished with a trio of kills and a pair of points, and Flanagan collected a pair of kills, an ace, and a point in the loss. In the second set, Smith led the way for the Lady Eagles with a trio of aces, while Kuykendall and Miller each added an ace in the win. Alex Twitty put in an ace, and Eden Clements added a kill in the loss for the Lady Bulldogs. In the third set, Smith again led the way for Vinemont with three aces, and Flanagan added a pair of aces and a point in the win. Twilley finished with a trio of aces in the loss for Hanceville. Alex Twitty added an ace and a point, while Henderson collected an ace as well. In the final set, Stephens led the way for the Lady Eagles with a trio of aces and a pair of points, and Smith added three more aces in the win. Zoe Pitts collected an ace in the loss for the Lady Bulldogs.

Falkville 2 – Hanceville 0 (Match Two) (16-25, 20-25)

Hanceville got out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first set against Falkville behind a kill by Alex Twitty and back-to-back aces by Pitts. Falkville came back to tie things up at four. An ace by Alex Twitty gave the Lady Bulldogs a 6-5 lead, but the Lady Blue Devils went on a little run to take a 9-6 lead. The lead would only get bigger and bigger after that for Falkville, as it swelled to 16-8. A kill by Twilley cut it to 17-11, but Falkville ended up scoring five straight points to take a 22-11 lead. The Lady Bulldogs went on a late push to get back in the game. A point by Clements, and four straight aces by Twilley made it a 22-16 game. They didn’t get any closer after that, though, as Falkville scored the final three points to take the first set 25-16.

The second set was tight early on. Falkville held a slim 6-5 lead, but Hanceville scored the next four points to take a 9-6 lead. The Lady Blue Devils went on a run of their own and ended up taking an 11-10 lead. The Lady Bulldogs ended up taking a 14-12 lead late in the set, but Falkville went on a 6-0 run to take an 18-14 lead. A point by Bella McAfee and an ace by Clements made it 18-16, and later on, a point by Twilley cut it to 19-18. Falkville, though, quickly pushed their lead to 22-18 and didn’t let go of the lead the rest of the way, as they ended up sweeping Hanceville, 25-16, and 25-20.

Twilley had a big game in the first set, as she finished with four aces and a kill. Pitts added a pair of aces, and Twitty collected a kill and an ace in the loss for Hanceville. In the second set, Clements finished with a pair of aces and a kill to lead the way for the Lady Bulldogs in the loss.

Vinemont 2 – Falkville 0 (Match Three) (25-20, 25-8)

Vinemont jumped out to a quick 5-2 lead behind a point by Stephens, a kill by Addison Holcomb, and an ace by Miller. Reagan Robinson’s ace made it 7-3, and later on in the set, Flanagan, Stephens, and Holcomb each added a kill to stretch the Lady Eagle lead to 11-5. Falkville went on a run and ended up cutting it to 14-12, but Vinemont went on one of their own after that. Kills by Kuykendall, Flanagan, and another ace by Robinson helped them stretch their lead to 21-13. The Lady Eagles pushed their lead to 24-15 after a Holcomb kill, but Falkville scored the next five points to make it a 24-20 game. Vinemont was able to collect the final point of the set and ended up taking it 25-20.

The second set was all Vinemont. Falkville jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, but behind a point by Stephens, a kill and a point by Kuykendall, and two more aces by Smith, the Lady Eagles grabbed an 8-2 lead. Emma Hathaway got in on the action as well, as she collected back-to-back aces to give Vinemont a 13-5 lead. Thomason added a pair of kills and Stephens collected a point late, as the Lady Eagles finished off the sweep of the Lady Blue Devils 25-20 and 25-8.

In the first set, Holcomb finished with a trio of kills. Flanagan added a pair of kills and a point. Stephens collected a pair of points and a kill, and Robinson put in a pair of aces in the win for Vinemont. Stephens led the way with a trio of points and a kill. Smith and Hathaway each collected a pair of aces. Thomason added a pair of kills, and Kuykendall finished with a kill and a point in the win for the Lady Eagles.
