PHIL CAMPBELL, Ala. – Vinemont traveled to face the Phil Campbell Bobcats in its region opener Friday night and four quarters weren’t nearly enough for these two teams to settle things. At the end of regulation, the game was tied at 14 but after four hard-fought overtime periods, Phil Campbell edged the Eagles 44-42.
Kayden Henderson scored from 10 yards out on the first play of the second quarter to put the Eagles up 8-0. Vinemont then forced a turnover on downs and held the ball for the remainder of the half to maintain an 8-0 lead at the break.
Phil Campbell got on the board with nine minutes to play in the fourth quarter to cut the score to 8-6. Vinemont quickly answered when Kayden Henderson raced 58 yards to the end zone to put the Eagles up 14-6. The Bobcats tied up the game at 14 with 59 seconds remaining in regulation.
Phil Campbell found the endzone first in overtime, Vinemont answered in their half of overtime thanks to Henderson knotting the game at 22. On the first play of the second overtime Henderson scored but the Bobcats answered to tie the game at 30. The Bobcats scored first to start the third overtime; Vinemont answered right back on the first play as Henderson broke free for a score to tie the game at 36.
Vinemont scored on the first play of the fourth overtime thanks to the hard running from Henderson but an unsuccessfully conversion gave the Eagles a 42-36 advantage, Phil Campbell scored and successfully converted the two-point try which ended up being the deciding factor in a thrilling, back and forth, 44-42 4 OT game to kick off region play.
Vinemont will be back on the road next week to take on Midfield.
