ADDISON, Ala. – Addison was back home to host a tri-match with Haleyville and Winston County Thursday night and the Lady Bulldogs earned wins over both teams. Addison beat Haleyville in three sets while defeating WCHS in straight sets.
Addison 2 – Haleyville 1 (25-21, 18-25, 15-6)
The Lady Bulldogs opened up with the Lady Lions from Haleyville and got off to a great start. Addison’s Lauryn Cunningham served the Lady Dawgs to a 9-4 lead. Solid defense from Brystil Moser and Mattie Johnson fueled the Dawgs lead. Haleyville would come storming back to tie it up at 14. Addison Coach Kaydi Woodard called timeout to settle her young Dawgs down and it appeared to work, as the Lady Dawgs took 9 of the next 12 points to take a 23-17 lead. Addison’s run was due in large part to Annabeth Powell’s serve work. Haleyville made a short run, but Addison was able to take the first set, 25-21.
The second set was a tale of two halves. Addison, as customary, got off to a smoking good start as they took a 10-3 lead and it looked like Addison would get the sweep. The Lady Lions got a heated talking too from their Head Coach during a timeout and it worked wonders. The Ladies from Haleyville came back laser focused and ran off 11 straight points and 17 of the next 19 points to take a 20-12 lead. Addison could do no right and Haleyville could do no wrong. The two teams traded points the remainder of the way and Haleyville took the second set 25-18.
The third set was all about which Addison team would show up, the focused team or the team that seemingly falls into funks. The answer was loud and clear as the Lady Bulldogs demolished the Lady Lions 15-6. After Addison took a 4-3 lead it was all Addison from then on as Katie Barrett served very well and Ava Bartlett and Cunningham dominated the net. Addison took the set and the match, 2 sets to 1.
Addison 2 – Winston County 0 (25-19, 25-21)
Addison opened up the first set and once again, got off to a great start. Addison took a 7-2 lead behind Barrett’s serve and Bartlett, Cunningham and Johnson handling the net. Bartlett, Cunningham and Johnson sound like a law firm. WCHS then took 5 out of 7 points to cut the lead to 9-7 and get right back into the game. The ladies from Addison then took control as they had a great run taking 8 out of 9. Johnson had 2 aces while Barrett had 1. Johnson had 2 blocks while Moser had 3 digs in the run. Addison actually worked the lead to 21-12 when the Lady Jackets came back scoring 7 of the next 9 points as they forced the Lady Dawgs into several mistakes. Leading 23-19, Addison sealed it with the final 2 points for the 25-19 victory.
The second set was just as close. Both teams exchanged points, unable to pull away from one another. Addison led 9-7. Barrett and Bartlett had several kills. Moser continued to get the digs like she was working for an excavating company. Addison pulled ahead, 16-14 and it was still anyone’s game. WCHS took the lead with some quality serving, leading the hometown Dawgs 19-18. Johnson then served the Lady Dawgs to 6 straight points and command of the game at 24-19. Addison finally was able to put the Lady Jackets away 25-21 for the sweep.
Lady Dawgs Head Coach Kaydi Woodard,
“I thought we stayed focused for the most part in both games, but we still have to get better about not going into lulls during the match. We usually do that when we are ahead, and I know that part of the game will improve as we get more experience. We are one of the youngest teams that I have had here at Addison but with their inexperience it gives us a chance to grow. The talent is there we just need to mature and work on consistency.”
