PREP VOLLEYBALL: West Point hosts tri-match with Cullman, Addison

WEST POINT, Ala. – West Point was back home Tuesday night hosting a tri-match with Cullman and Addison and all three teams left the gym with a win. The Lady Warriors took the first match over Cullman 2-0, the Lady Bearcats bounced back with a 2-1 win over Addison in the second match and the Lady Bulldogs capped the night with a 2-1 win over West Point in the third match.

West Point 2 – Cullman 0 (Match One)

West Point jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in the first set and quickly pushed their lead to 8-2 behind a point by Kelsye Will and an ace by Charli Aris. A point by Karina Harris cut it to 9-4, but later on in the set, Patton Fell’s ace made it a 14-7 game. The Lady Bearcats cut it to 16-11, and later on, to 18-13 on a point by Harris. The Lady Warriors stretched their lead to 21-13 on a kill by Macie Brown, but Cullman kept trying to claw their way back into the contest. A kill by Lily Nixon made it a 22-17 game, and later on, a point by Jerriesue Godbee cut it to 24-20. West Point, though, collected the final point of the game and ended up taking the first set, 25-20.

The second set was close early on. A kill by Harris tied things up at three, but three straight points by the Lady Warriors, including an ace from Aris, gave them a 6-3 lead. Cullman took an 8-7 lead on a kill by Blakely Brannon, but West Point got the lead right back at 12-9 on an ace by Laklin Shadix, and a point and a kill by Adrianna Owens. A point and a kill by Shadix helped the Lady Warriors pushed their lead to 20-13. Cullman made a push to get back into the game. A point by Brannon cut it to 22-18 and later on in the set, a point by Ainsley Cameron and a kill by Nixon trimmed it to just one at 24-23. Owens collected the final point of the game for West Point, as that helped them get the 25-23 win in the second set.

In the first set, Brown led the way for West Point with a trio of kills and an ace, and Will collected a pair of points in the win. For Cullman, Harris finished with a pair of points and a kill, and Brannon added an ace, a kill, and a point in the loss. In the second set, Owens finished with six points and a kill, while Shadix put up a pair of kills, a pair of points and an ace in the win for the Lady Warriors. For the Lady Bearcats, Harris finished with an ace, a kill, and a point, while Godbee collected a kill and a point in the loss.

Cullman 2 – Addison 1 (Match Two)

Cullman got out to a 3-1 lead behind a point by Cameron and an ace by Brannon, but Addison collected the next three points to take a 4-3 lead. A pair of points and a kill by Harris, plus an ace by Millie Jenkins, helped give the Lady Bearcats a 9-5 lead. An ace by Katie Barrett cut it to 9-7, but Cullman quickly created some distance between them and the Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Bearcats swelled their lead to 16-10, but Addison cut it to 16-12 on a kill by Ava Bartlett and an ace by Brystil Moser. It was all Cullman after that, though, as they quickly pushed their lead to 19-12 behind points by Nixon and Harris. Despite Addison cutting it to 19-15, Cullman didn’t let them get any closer after that, as they scored the final six points of the set, and Jenkins scored the final five points on aces, to give them a 25-15 win in the first set.

The Lady Bearcats jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the second set and quickly pushed their lead to 10-5. Addison, though, responded in a big way, as they scored the next 14 points, which included a pair of points by Lauryn Cunningham, and a kill by Bartlett, to take a 19-10 lead. Cullman, though, went on a run of their own to cut it to 20-15. A kill by Barrett gave the Lady Bulldogs a 24-18 lead, but Cullman made things a little interesting in the end. A kill by Clementine Hollingsworth and a point by Brannon cut it to 24-21, but Addison ended up getting the final point of the second set and ended up taking it, 25-21.

Just like the second set, Cullman got out to an early lead. The Lady Bearcats broke an early tie by scoring the next four points to take a 5-1 lead. Back-to-back aces by Nixon pushed their lead to 8-2, but a point by Barrett cut it to 8-4. Cullman took over after that, as they went on a 7-1 run, which ended with a kill by Godbee, and they took the third set, 15-5.

In the first set, Jenkins went crazy as she finished with six aces, and Harris put up a trio of points and a kill in the win for Cullman. For Addison, Barrett finished with a pair of kills and an ace in the loss. In the second set, Barrett finished with a pair of kills, an ace, and a point. Bartlett added a pair of kills and a point, while Cunningham collected a pair of points in the win for the Lady Bulldogs. For Cullman, Brannon led the way with a pair of points and an ace. L.K. Granger put up a kill and a point, while Harris and Cameron each collected a pair of points in the loss. In the third set, Harris finished with a pair of kills, an ace, and a point for Cullman. Godbee put up a pair of kills, while Nixon collected a pair of aces in the win. Barrett finished with a point in the loss for Addison.

Addison 2 – West Point 1 (Match Three)

West Point and Addison squared off in the final match of the night and it was a well-fought battle between the Warriors and Bulldogs. The first set was tied at 6 early on but Addison was able to pull ahead 12-9 as the match progressed. West Point was able to trim the lead to 16-14 at one point but couldn’t come any closer than that and the Bulldogs pulled away to take the first set 25-19.

The second set started off even tighter than the first. The score was knotted at 6 early on but a 3-1 run from the Warriors gave them a 9-7 lead. Addison responded with a scoring run of its own to move ahead 12-10 midway through the set. West Point responded with a 5-1 run later in the set to take a 19-18 lead and just a few serves later we were tied up at 20. The Warriors scored three straight points to pull ahead 23-20 and went on to take the second set 25-21.

Addison got off to a 3-0 start in the third set and stretched that lead to 7-2 as play went on.  West Point continued to battle, cutting the lead down to 11-8 at one point but the Warriors were unable to complete the comeback, and the Bulldogs took the third set 15-10 to win the match.
