JONES CHAPEL, Ala. – For the third year, the Jones Chapel Volunteer Fire Department (JCVFD) will host Community Day, this year on Sept. 8 from 2-6 p.m. at the station located at 96 County Road 940.

In addition to the day of family fun, with activities, games and food, the department hopes attendees leave Community Day a little more fire-smart than upon arrival.

“During the event, we are having a community meeting at 2 p.m. where we will go over the current state of the fire department and also answer questions of anyone in attendance,” said Fire Chief Clint Thrasher. “We will have our fire prevention smoke house set up and some of our equipment on display. “

Community Day will have a couple of new attractions this year – a dunking booth and cake walk – with all proceeds going toward JCVFD’s new Fire Explorer Post. According to Thrasher, the Explorer Post is part of a program open to young men and women from grade six to 20 years of age who are interested careers in the fields of fire or emergency services. The program combines classroom training with hands-on lessons and field work, allowing for a real-world glimpse into the lives of emergency personnel.

Thrasher explained, “We are in the process of starting a Fire Explorer Post to train local teenagers on firefighting and basics of EMS. During Community Day we will have a cake walk and a dunking booth. The donations collected during those two events will go toward the Explorer Post.”

After the community meeting at 2 p.m. the station and its staff will provide hamburgers and hot dogs to the post-lunchtime crowd, while supplies last.

Community Day is open to all and not limited to residents of Jones Chapel.

“We welcome not only citizens of Jones Chapel, but anyone who would like to visit and learn more about the great things happening at Jones Chapel Fire,” said Thrasher.

Community Day will be held on Sept. 8, from 2-6 p.m. at JCVFD, located at 96 County Road 940.
