CULLMAN, Ala. – Local nonprofit The Link of Cullman County, as well as the West Elementary School library recently received grants from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation to purchase curriculum materials and books.
The Link offers various resources to the community, including classes, camps and tutoring sessions for school-aged children. The Link’s most recent Kindergarten Readiness Camp was an overwhelming success; individual tutoring services are also a hit with families that find The Link for resources. Once weekly, students are able to meet with a tutor at The Link to go over curriculum and study and test materials.
The grant The Link received totaled $2,100 and will be used for its tutoring programs which see a wide variety of students of differing ages and skill levels. These funds will alleviate some of the cost of purchasing specific supportive online curriculum.
“We are so thankful to receive funds from the Dollar General Foundation to aid us in helping our tutoring students continue to grow their literacy skills,” said Literacy Coordinator Dakota Trammell. “We are excited to now be able to offer the students additional online reading material that can be more custom suited to each individual student’s needs and interests.”
The West Elementary School library was awarded $4,000 from the foundation.
In April 2024, West Elementary Media Specialist Tere Kelly was given an opportunity from the Cullman County Economic Development office to apply for the specialized literacy funds and successfully wrote a grant proposal for $4,000 to allow the purchase of new non-fiction books for the school’s library media center.
With a student body of over 450, the texts will be a welcome addition to the shelves of the school’s library, adding increased access to and availability of non-fiction works.
Kelly said she hopes the additional books will increase the educational value of the library by ensuring that each student has access to quality educational literature.
“These resources are vital for the students’ educational development, as non-fiction plays a crucial role in fostering critical thinking and broadening their understanding of the world,” she said.
