CULLMAN, Ala. – It’s Labor Day Weekend, and local law enforcement is reminding Cullman County residents to be safe as summer comes to an end.

The Cullman County Sheriff’s Office provided a few tips to make the weekend safer for families, travel and events.

  • When taking that final vacation of the summer, have a trusted neighbor or family member check on your residence.
  • Do not post you are leaving for vacation on social media! (Share your vacation AFTER you return home.)
  • With football season kicking off, and the impending tailgate parties, make good personal decisions concerning alcohol. Do not drink and drive.
  • Be diligent and aware. The easiest way to remain safe is to simply avoid the danger.
  • Lastly, if the need arises, do not hesitate to call the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office. The safety and well-being of the residents of Cullman County are our number one priority. If it is an emergency, dial 911. For any other assistance please call 256-734-0342.

From the Cullman Police Department, Public Relations Officer Adam Clark advised residents to stay aware of their surroundings and celebrate responsibly.

  • Drive defensively by checking your mirrors, using your turn signal, going the speed limit and assuming that every other driver is going to drive irresponsibly.
  • Wear a seatbelt.
  • It’s very important to drink plenty of water during your Labor Day festivities, especially if you’re going to consume alcohol, which dehydrates your body even more.
  • Drink water whenever you’re thirsty.
  • Set a limit on the amount of alcohol you plan to consume and stick with it.
  • For every alcoholic drink you consume, drink an equal amount of water.
  • NEVER operate machinery, use fireworks or swim while under the influence.
  • Always have someone available to give you a ride if you consume more than you planned.
  • If you have any issues, please contact the CPD at 256-734-1434.
