CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman County Commission on Aging operates seven full-time senior centers in the area: Colony, Crane Hill, Cullman, Fairview, Hanceville, Holly Pond and West Point. Each center is open Monday-Friday and offers area seniors a place of respite with fellowship, fun and food with their peers and neighbors. Staff and volunteers operate the hubs daily, and each center provides elderly residents a hot and homemade meal Monday-Friday. Volunteers are desperately needed to deliver meals to homebound seniors who cannot attend in person.
Cullman County Commission on Aging Nutrition Coordinator Laurie Knight said, “We would not be able to provide these meals without the help of volunteers.”
Meal delivery volunteers should be able to donate two to three hours of their time on any given day, Monday through Friday. Typically, volunteers arrive at their chosen center between 9:45-10 a.m. to pick up the prepared hot meals along with a delivery list with recipients and addresses. Volunteers usually complete their routes by noon.
Meals delivered to the doorstep of a homebound senior provide more than just sustenance and nutrition.
Explained Knight, “They are also providing a daily wellness check and some socialization to our homebound, which is very important as well.”
Having the additional hands and help of community volunteers to deliver meals also allows each center’s staff more time to spend planning and overseeing activities for participants who attend the center on a regular basis.
