Led by Maria (Paige Harbison Clabo, with green in hair) and Captain Von Trapp (Mark Preiss, with guitar), the Von Trapp family offers a stirring rendition of “Edelweiss” during Thursday’s performance of “The Sound of Music.” (W.C. Mann for The Cullman Tribune)

CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman Community Theatre on Thursday opened its production of “The Sound of Music” at Cullman High School. Well received by a large weeknight audience, the show continues with performances at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday.

The group’s description describes the show as “A tuneful, heartwarming story, based on the real life experiences of the Von Trapp Family singers, one of the world’s best-known concert groups in the era immediately preceding World War II. The musical tells the story of Maria, who takes a job as governess to a large family while she decides whether to become a nun. She falls in love with the children and their widowed father, Captain von Trapp. He is ordered to accept a commission in the German navy, but he opposes the Nazis.”

“I am very proud of this production,” said Director Wayne Cook. “We want it to communicate to this community that theater is alive and well and thriving in our county. We believe ‘The Sound of Music’ is a milestone production, and will set the tone for the future of CCT.  There has been a lot of hard work, a lot of people sharing their creative gifts, and a lot of divine intervention that has gone into this show. These people are so tremendous. This county has so much talent.”

While opening night had a few bugs, they were minor, and the overall production was well above what one might expect in community theater, and well within the high standards that Cullman has come to expect from Cook and his team.

Cook told The Tribune, “I want to thank our production team. They have poured their hearts into this show and that is what it takes. They have been rockstars. We hope the community will come out for the final three productions, and celebrate our community and the arts. As I said, we see this as a milestone show that will continue to build a stronger investment in the arts for our town.”
