MADISON, Ala. – Cullman traveled to Bob Jones to kick off the 2024 season against the Patriots Thursday night but unfortunately for Bearcat fans, the Patriots jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter and Cullman was unable to climb back from the early deficit. Bob Jones led 20-6 at halftime and went on the hand the ‘Cats a 48-12 loss.
Cullman kicked off to Bob Jones. During the run back, a personal foul penalty against Bob Jones resulted in a disqualified player and Bob Jones got the ball at their own 10-yard line. The Patriots wasted little time as Rhys Dorsey broke off a 90-yard touchdown run and with only 16 seconds off the game clock, Bob jones took a 7-0 lead after a successful PAT.
On the ensuing kickoff, Chance Hausler had a 38-yard kickoff return to put the Bearcats near midfield. Cullman’s offense failed to get positive yardage and punted the ball after three plays.
The Patriots took over on their 20-yard line. It took five plays, and the results were the same as Bob Jones scored a touchdown on a 52-yard touchdown pass play from Johnston Jackson to Dorsey. The PAT was no good and with 9:11 left in the first quarter Bob Jones extended their lead to 13-0.
Cullman put together a 12-play drive and were unable to score. Punter Tyler Brock had a great punt that put Bob Jones deep in their own end of the field at the nine-yard line.
After a Bob Jones punt, Cullman put together a 52-yard scoring drive when Cooper Ogstad scored on a seven-yard run. The PAT was missed, and Bearcats closed the score to 13-6 with 8:37 left in the half.
The Patriots ended the first half scoring with a 90-yard touchdown, 13 play drive when Jackson threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Samuel Monroe. With the successful PAT, the Patriots took a 20-6 halftime lead.
Both defenses played well in the third quarter. Near the end of the third quarter, the Patriots had the ball on their own 34-yard line. Four plays later, Jackson scored on a 40-yard touchdown run. The PAT was good, and Bob Jones led 27-6 with 2:10 left in the third quarter.
Cullman took over deep in their own end of the field. Three plays later, a Bearcat punt was fielded short on the Cullman 20-yard line by Aaron Mitchell, and he scored a touchdown with under a minute to play in the third quarter. The PAT was good and the lead for the Patriots was 34-6.
Assisted by an unsportsmanlike penalty on Bob Jones, the Bearcats took over on their own 45-yard line. As the fourth quarter began, Cullman completed a four play 55-yard touchdown when Preston Gay threw a 43-yard pass to Ogstad. After the missed PAT, the score was 34-12 with 11:01 left in the game.
Bob Jones completed the scoring with another touchdown pass from Jackson to make it 48-12 with 4:46 left in the game.
Cullman will return home next week to host Mortimer Jordan.
