CULLMAN, Ala. – A crowd of Cullman Police Officers stopped by City Hall Monday evening as the City honored one of their teammates for a job well done. Assistant Chief Brandon Patterson and Sgt. Joey Duncan recognized Patrol Officer Josh Spinks for the apprehension of Bryann Rodolfo Lucas Martinez, 25, of Albertville, following a foot pursuit on the city’s south side. At the time of the incident, Martinez was out on bond in a pending case of alleged shoplifting and trespassing at the South Cullman Walmart, and was being sought on subsequent charges of escape from custody.
Martinez previously had a Cullman County address near Holly Pond, until he was charged in 2021 with totaling another driver’s vehicle as an uninsured driver. When he could not be found to be summoned to court, a default judgment was issued in that case.
According to Mayor Woody Jacobs, Martinez was also suspected of acts of vandalism and theft at parks and recreation facilities in Cullman.
Martinez was located in Cullman on July 31, 2024 when he fled. Spinks caught him and returned him to custody, adding Escape third degree and Theft of Property fourth degree (for handcuffs he had taken during his prior escape) to the previous charges, for which his bond was revoked.
Following a notice that the subject was being sought, according to Patterson, “They was all patrolling that night, and he (Spinks) seen him at Marketplatz Theater. And he located the subject, who had warrants for escape from a prior event, and when he located, when he saw that Spinks was trying to locate him, he took off running. What he didn’t know is the fastest guy who chased him down. And Spinks run 150 yards, captured and arrested him. So Spinks did an excellent job, and we commend him on a job well done, and we appreciate him.”
