CULLMAN, Ala. – Go Platinum Salon will host a back-to-school event offering free haircuts and school supplies for K-12 students. The event will be held on Aug. 3, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at Daystar Church. Additionally, the Kool Breeze ice cream truck will be on-site with its selection of ice cream treats.

Free haircuts will be available to all students in need, with the service limited to trims and basic clipper cuts to ensure that every student has a chance to participate. All kids who receive a free haircut will also receive a free ice cream. School supplies will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, including crayons, glue sticks, paper, colored pencils, folders, pens and pencils.

“Last year really opened my eyes; there are many families struggling for many different reasons. This time of year can be very stressful and we hope this helps relieve some of that stress,” shared Kristen Cryer, owner of Go Platinum Salon.

“I helped with a free haircut day at Pathway Church in Mobile at the beginning of my career and it opened my eyes to a need that is out there. We have also had difficult times in our own lives so we understand the struggle. We have been blessed in many ways and we believe God has given us our talents to not only provide for our families but to help others in need,” she shared of the inspiration behind the event.

With humble beginnings, Go Platinum Salon has found a way to give back through events like this. Cryer took a chance in October 2022 by opening Go Platinum Salon after working in a private suite for the majority of her career. After developing a severe hair dye allergy, her love for doing hair began to wane.

With a prayerful, God-given purpose, Cryer made her dream happen with Go Platinum Salon.

“After many prayers, God laid it on my heart to open a bigger salon. I now get to work with two incredible stylists, I am free from the flare-ups and business is doing great. Taking that leap seemed impossible, but God made a way for me,” she expressed.

Cryer hopes Go Platinum Salon serves as a reminder to others that hard times are temporary and blessings often come through struggles. She uses that foundational message to give back to the community and provide services like this to those in need.

Go Platinum Salon is accepting any donation of supplies for the event. All supplies can be dropped off at Go Platinum Salon and will be given to a student in need. Cash donations are accepted as well. Cryer is encouraging any experienced stylist or barber to participate to ensure that no students are turned away.

“Even if someone could show up for an hour or so, we’d greatly appreciate it. We had to turn some students away last year because we were just so busy,” stated Cryer.

The Go Platinum team, consisting of Cryer, Emma Brock (salon manager/stylist) and Megan Lewis (stylist), looks forward to serving the community with this event and making a positive impact on those in need.
