CULLMAN, Ala. – The City of Cullman on Wednesday, July 24, announced the completion of a major safety upgrade at the Arnold Street Southeast railroad crossing. In partnership with CSX, a state-of-the-art four-quadrant gate barrier system has been installed, marking a significant improvement in pedestrian and vehicular safety.
This new system features gate arms in all four quadrants of the crossing, preventing vehicles from circumventing the barriers when activated. The upgrade also includes the implementation of constant warning time technology, enhancing the overall safety and efficiency of the crossing.
“This installation represents a crucial step forward in our ongoing efforts to improve public safety,” said Mayor Woody Jacobs. “The four-quadrant gate system provides an additional layer of protection for our residents and visitors, especially considering that this crossing previously lacked any gate arms.”
The Arnold Street Southeast project is part of a larger initiative aimed at establishing a quiet zone corridor through downtown Cullman. This zone, which will extend from Ninth Street Southeast to Eighth Street Northeast, will allow trains to pass through without sounding their horns, except in emergency situations.
“We’re excited about the positive impact this will have on our downtown area,” added Cullman Economic Development Agency Director Dale Greer. “The quiet zone will significantly enhance the quality of life for residents and businesses in the heart of our city, while maintaining the highest standards of safety.”
