GOOD HOPE, Ala. – Good Hope’s City Council held its regularly scheduled meeting at Good Hope City Hall Monday night and approved an ordinance to update the city’s building codes. In 2022, the state of Alabama requested anyone changing codes to update to the 2021 International Building Codes.

Ordinance No: 011-2024

“Whereas, this ordinance is enacted pursuant to the Act and the city’s general jurisdictional power and land use authority, in accordance with the State of Alabama Division of Construction Management, it is therefore, provided:

The intent of this ordinance is to: (a) promote the general welfare and safety of the community (b) require a building permit for all incorporated areas of the City of Good Hope (permit must be obtained prior to start of project) and (c) follow current building codes.

It shall be unlawful for any person, partnership, business, or corporation to undertake or cause to be undertaken any site preparation, development, renovations, improvements, construction or relocation of a building or structure (including manufactured housing) as in accordance with this ordinance, within the incorporated areas of the City of Good Hope unless a building permit has been obtained from the city clerk. Provisions of all other local, state, and/or federal codes, ordinances, and regulations shall be applicable for any project approved by the issuance of a building permit by the city clerk. It shall be the sole responsibility of the property owner to comply with such.

The basic format of the building permit shall include filling out the Building Permit Application form with the name, address, phone number, email (if available) of the applicant and the landowner. Supply required/pertinent information requested on the Building Permit Application.”

The Council also discussed the City’s upcoming Back to School Bash, which will be held Thursday, Aug. 1 from 5-7 p.m. at Good Hope’s Municipal Park, located at 135 Municipal Drive.

“It’s that time of year again, back to school in just a few weeks. This is a fun time for the kids and us as mayor, council and employees to get to interact with our community,” Good Hope Mayor Jerry Bartlett said. “Myself as a retired teacher, I see the importance of investing in Children now because these are our future leaders.  We care about the teachers and students, and this is a small event we can do to let them know we care and wish them the best upcoming school year.”

“We are so excited for this event,” Shared Good Hope City Clerk Lori Leusby, “We have several fun activities planned for the kids to enjoy.”

Activities include an interactive petting zoo, allowing children of all ages to pet and visit with farm animals and others, door prizes, free haircuts, games, snacks, free back-to-school pictures, inflatable water slides, and a mobile arcade.

The first 200 people will receive a free bagged lunch, and the first 150 students will receive a new Raiders-themed t-shirt for the first day of school. The door prizes have been donated by businesses and individuals in the Good Hope community. Prizes will be drawn at 6:30 p.m. and attendees must be present to claim their prize.

The Good Hope City Council will hold its next meeting Monday, Aug. 12 at 6:30 p.m. at Good Hope City Hall.
