CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman City Council on Monday, July 22, 2024, approved the purchase of the facilities of the former Clark Street Church of God and Calvary Apostolic First United Pentecostal Church, to create a 200-seat community performing arts center.  Among other uses, the building will house the Cullman Community Theatre.

“We all are very excited about the investment into arts in our community,” said CCT Director Wayne Cook. “It’s a great step toward solidifying our commitment to making theatre accessible to this community for many years to come.”

Cullman Parks, Recreation & Sports Tourism Executive Director Nathan Anderson, whose department will oversee the facility, told the council of his first visit to the site with Mayor Woody Jacobs, “Man, just walking through the doors, we knew right away that’s what it was. So I know, I believe about every councilman went by the property at some point in time. We appreciate them opening the doors so many times. But we all felt the same way.

“We’ve got a very talented community theater program. We’ve got a lot of talented performing artists of all kinds: music, choir – I’m just excited to have a home for them, because this has been a long time coming. Cullman has a rich history of this: when we were founded with the Germans, there were several great theaters here, so it’s great to see us embrace the arts and move it forward.”

Anderson told The Tribune that he plans to visit other community theatre facilities and bring in experts to oversee the conversion of the facility, and that he hopes that the new arts center will be open to use “soon.”
