CULLMAN, Ala. – In a significant move to enhance the cultural and performing arts landscape of Cullman, the Cullman City Council on Monday, July 22, 2024, approved the purchase of the historic First United Pentecostal Church building, located at the corner of Third Avenue Northeast and Clark Street Northeast, behind Cullman City Hall. The 6,000-square-foot building, with its beautiful A-frame 40-foot-tall sanctuary, will serve as the future home of the Community Theatre, as well as a venue for other civic and performing arts gatherings.

Mayor Woody Jacobs highlighted the importance of this acquisition, stating, “This project not only preserves a historic downtown building, but also enriches our community by providing a versatile space for cultural and civic activities, along with much-needed additional parking near Depot Park. It’s an investment in our city’s future.”

Cullman City Council President Jenny Folsom expressed her enthusiasm for this project, stating, “The acquisition of this historic church marks a new chapter for Cullman’s cultural development. It will be a cornerstone for the performing arts, offering a space for local talent and diverse performances.”

Cullman Community Theatre member and former Dollywood performer, Paige Clabo, expressed excitement for this historic move, stating, “I am thrilled to have a dedicated space that not only honors the rich history of our city, but also paves the way for a vibrant future in the performing arts. This theater will be a hub for celebrating the talent and creativity of our community.”

Cullman Parks, Recreation & Sports Tourism Executive Director Nathan Anderson highlighted Cullman’s storied past with theater and the performing arts. “From its inception, Cullman’s founding community members supported the arts, establishing venues like Kullman Hall, Ambruster’s Hall, the Esther Opera House, Princess Theater and Lyric Theatre, which hosted a variety of theatrical productions, concerts and civic gatherings. Re-opening a new community theater after nearly a century continues that legacy, celebrating our cultural heritage and inspiring future generations.”

City leaders said the purchase and planned renovation of the church underscores the City’s commitment to fostering the arts and providing residents with enriching cultural experiences. The Community Theatre is expected to host a wide range of performances and events, from local plays and musical productions to community meetings and educational programs.

Rodney Basenburg, chairman of the Cullman Community Theatre Committee, said, “I want to express our deepest gratitude to the city council and Mayor Jacobs for this monumental investment, which will be instrumental in helping move things forward for us. We are excited about the future and look forward to continuing our partnership to enrich the cultural landscape of Cullman.”
