Pedestrian struck, killed on I-65 Saturday morning

CULLMAN, Ala. – A single-vehicle crash involving two pedestrians resulted in the death of one. The crash occurred at approximately 2:30 a.m. Saturday, July 20.

Alabama State Troopers said Madelyn R. Guerra, 20, of Adelphi, Maryland, a pedestrian, was sitting in the roadway and was fatally injured when she was struck by a 2022 Toyota Highlander driven by Julie B. Austel, 40, of Fortville, Indiana.

Guerra was pronounced deceased at the scene.

A second pedestrian, Tierra R. Cathcart, 19, of Anniston, Alabama, was also struck by the Toyota. Troopers said Cathcart was injured and transported to UAB Hospital in Birmingham for treatment.

The crash occurred on Interstate 65 near Alabama Highway 69, approximately 6 miles south of Cullman, in Cullman County.

Nothing further is available as Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Highway Patrol Division continue to investigate.

CULLMAN COUNTY, Ala. – At approximately 2:29 Saturday morning an emergency call was placed to report a pedestrian struck on Interstate 65 southbound between mile markers 293 and 294.

Cullman County Coroner Jeremy Kilpatrick confirmed that Madelyn Roxana Guerra, 20, of Silver Spring, Maryland, was pronounced deceased at the scene. 

Kilpatrick said Guerra was struck by a passenger vehicle, not a semi-truck. 

This incident is under investigation.
